12) Why Does Coyotito 'Have' To Die

Coyotito did not have to have to die but his name, Coyotito, means "little Coyote". When the trackers heard Coyotito's cry they thought it sounded similar to a baby coyote's whine. The Tracker aimed, shot blindly, and hit the baby. Juana must have sat there in shock as she picked up the now dead Coyotito, wrapped him in her shawl, and carried him back home. The entire book was about the family trying to get money for a doctor because Coyotito got stung by a scorpion, the pearl was for him.

11) Identify and explain one symbol found in The Pearl and why it is important to the novella.

The symbol found in the story called "The Pearl" is the shawl that Juana wears with Coyotito in it. This symbol represents a shield-like protection of Coyotito. Like when they where going through the desert she puts her shawl over Coyotito to protect him. "Juana carried Coyotito on her back, covered and held in by her head shawl, and the baby slept, cheek turned sideways against her shoulder. The head shawl covered the baby" (chapter 5). This shows us that the shawl is used to protect Coyotito. And at the end of the story, Juana uses her shawl to carry Coyotito's dead body as we can see here, "Juana carried her shawl like a sack over her shoulder. And in it was a small limp heavy bundle". This proves that even after Coyotito died Juana still used her shawl to protect him.

6) Why does Kino think the killing of a man is not as evil as the killing of a boat?

Kino thinks of the killing of a man not as evil as the killing of a boat because that canoe has been passed down for generations and because a canoe can not protect itself. We know this because he thinks "The canoe of his grandfather, plastered over and over" and "For a boat does not have sons, and a boat cannot protect itself, and a wounded boat does not heal". This shows us that the canoe is important because Kino is so heartbroken by it being ruined. And even when he's finding solutions he never once thinks of taking another person's boat he doesn't because he knows how much it means. "it did not occur to him to take one of the canoes of his neighbors. Never once did the thought enter his head, any more than he could have conceived breaking a boat".The canoe represents status and being able to feed your family so to take that away is just cruel.

The significance of Kino and Juana walking next to each other is that the woman is normally supposed to walk behind the man. They were walking back to the village with the deceased Coyotito in Juana's shawl and the pearl that caused all this trouble. Soon after they walked sulkily down the road to the coastline they got in the canoe, rowed out to sea and Kino chucked the pearl into the ocean.

One example of irony found in the novella is that one of the things he wanted from the pearl was a rifle which in the end he did get but at the expense of his son.
1. Analyze how Kino changes from the beginning of the novella to the end. Was he wrong to continue on his quest to sell the pearl for a larger price?

Kino was wrong to continue on his quest to sell the pearl for a larger price because it lead to Coyotito being killed. Juana and Kino loved Coyotito as we can see in chapter 2 when Juana cares for Coyotito. "Kino heard the creak of the rope when Juana took Coyotito out of his hanging box and cleaned him and hammocked him in her shawl in a loop that placed him close to her breast. Kino could see these things without looking at them. Juana sang softly an ancient song that had only three notes and yet endless variety of interval. And this was part of the family song too." This shows up how much Coyotito meant to them especially since it was their first child. Throughout the story, Coyotito has been a symbol of innocence as we can see by the way he is described here "Beneath it in the hanging box Coyotito laughed and reached up his hand toward it". This shows us that Coyotito doesn't know what is bad and good. Although, at the time Kino knew he was being cheated for the price and if he would have known what was going to happen if didn't sell it he would have just sold it. But since I have finished the story and I know what happens I do think he is in the wrong.
