Similarities vs differences - what makes us to connect with other people and cultures? Exploring the differences or engaging with similarities?

Every person, every culture, every place in the world is unique. Fact.

But.... I can play kankles - it does not make me unique as there are many people in Lithuania who play kankles too. I am a lithuanian in Guadeloupe - there are more lithuanian people in Guadeloupe. I can make mosaics - there are many people who are better than me making mosaics. etc....

As I was sifting through all my characteristics and features I could not find a single one that makes me unique! However we agree that every person, every culture, every place in the world is unique. It is a combination of characteristics and features that makes us and them unique.

We are drawn to the places that enhance our personalities and create resonance in our hearts. We are drawn to the people that have the same characteristics - passion for art and music, love for nature, enjoying the same activities. Sharing is an important part of well-being. Giving and receiving with an open heart - is an art that we all need to learn - and teach - or even better - learn together with our students!

I felt tremendously welcome at Rita's house today. It became a pleasant introduction to the other course participants: the delicious Greek tapenade and the welcome gifts from the Polish team immediately set the tone. My expectation was that we were going to follow the class in a classroom on benches with a presentation by Rita. That's how the training sessions go in Belgium, after all. It soon became clear to me that I would return home with a lot of new knowledge and teaching practices. That is why I chose the following photo: it immediately shows how you can also learn a lot in a non-school environment. What did I learn today? The woman who briefly interrupted our lesson immediately showed the reality in which we have ended up here. Rita then framed the tensions that exist between the white and black populations here in Guadeloupe. This colonial history is still strongly felt today. I am very curious to learn more about this and look forward to the museum trip in Point-à-Pitre tomorrow.

A first lesson with many new impressions. This meeting gave me a flashback to my Erasmus exchange 6 years ago in Aix-en-Provence. There, as a 20-year-old, I first came into contact with other cultures, nationalities and language barriers. It is a period that has had a great influence on my personality and it is therefore very interesting to be able to reflect on this with the theory we were given today: national identity, personal identity and deep learning.
I also took classes in Aix on the French creole languages. We studied the various overseas territories where French was spoken and the characteristics of those languages. In that series of lessons, one year was important: 1848. Today I learnt that this year was significant mainly in the hexagonal territory and that little changed in Guadeloupe at that time.
For the rest, I also learned:
- In Guadeloupe, the ancestors are honoured by spilling some rum before drinking
- People in Guadeloupe prepare their own drinks to their taste and needs
- Here they say à nous-mêmes instead of santé when they toast
- Good bananas always have spots
