The metaphor in her poem relies on the Puritan beliefs about children: children are born sinful and need to be instructed by their parents. This then relates to the belief of predetermined elect. Since she couldn’t find any redeeming qualities in those ideas, she compares the way she casts out those thoughts to the way Puritans marginalize the non-elect.
