How she is putting out “god’s gift”(her work) for money “And for mother, she alas is poor, Which caused her thus to send thee out of the door” (Bradstreet 1671-1672).

Anne Bradstreet’s poem references Puritan beliefs about the inherent sinfulness of children, the predetermined elect, and the pressure to conform and avoid opinions through the metaphor and theme presented in her poem. The metaphor in her poem relies on the Puritan beliefs about children: children are born sinful and need to be instructed by their parents. This then relates to the belief of predetermined elect. Since she couldn’t find any redeeming qualities in those ideas, she compares the way she casts out those thoughts to the way Puritans marginalize the non-elect. The act of casting out these ideas emphasizes the constant pressure to conform to Puritan societal values, people are expected to reflect on all their thoughts and toss out any ideas that are flawed
