Activity: A Day Without Media

So I chose Sunday July 8, 2018 to do this activity. My theory behind it was I will be working on the Window Display so I will be to busy to look at social media, talk to friends via text/calls. The store does have a radio, but I knew I'd be working in a section I would not be able to hear it.

I know I could use electronics for work. However, I prepared for the day before. I had all my decals, and decorations that needed to be cut on my Silhouette Cameo done on Saturday.

So that Sunday, I wake up feed the goats, sheep, and chickens. As I'm waiting for the cats water dish to fill up. I pull out my phone and start looking at Instagram. STRIKE ONE and it was only 6:00 a.m. I quickly put it away like a child sneaking chocolate before dinner. I figured it was 6:00 a.m. and I whose day really starts before their third cup of coffee.

So got ready, packed up my call with all my supplies, and head into Emmaus. STRIKE TWO occurs when I realize I was listening to a podcast and I laughed at the squatty potty ad. Turn off the radio, and realize I'd be if we had a post apoplectic situation and we had to rely on a horse and buggy to get around ( You'd get it if you were surrounded by Mennonite farms).

Get into the shop early, no one is there, don't turn on the radio, and proceed to set things up to start building my window display for our Christmas in July event. This is where I thought I'd have it easy. I am plugging away get things done. It is now about three hours and i'm doing okay, I'm busy, not thinking about the online social world. I'm entertained by the people walking by oblivious to a guy standing in window staring at them.

It is 5:00 p.m., shop is closed, I finished up and go to post the window on my Instagram, and STRIKE THREE, I'm out!

So long story short, no I did not succeed, I however now make a consisious effort to not be on my phone. It made me show how addicted we are to our phones and social media, etc. For me, media is something I use for work, or when I'm bored. I don't have a feeling of going on for any validation or a "I need to go on or I will die situation". Life is without social media, DOES allow you to be more productive, and allows you to interact with others face-to-face. If I didn't group up in a media driven culture, I wouldn't be missing anything. I think of my neighbors (Mennonite) and they don't have any connect with media, They work all day, the younger kids play outside, the older kids have huge volleyball games at night. Knowing how we as a culture are so addictive to media, and then seeing the Mennonite culture, it puts things in perspective. It shows we CAN live with a little less media in our lives

Most of the people around the shop supported this activity. They themselves don't use media, except for Ralvery (knitters community), Instagram, and Facebook. So it wasn't hard for them to understand.

The Article Trends in community engagement was very interesting. Working in Alumni Relations, that is one of our main priorities, how to we not only engage alum, but actively engage in meaningful, effective ways. It is a struggle we face everyday, and I'm glad to see its not only us.

I wasn't surprised that their is this problem. If you think about it, my parents got a note on my report card four times a year, they maybe met with the teacher once, if that. But now with media, and our current climate, parents want to be more connected. Parents today grew up with the internet, they grew up with some form of social media.

I was surprised to see that the parents involved did not just want a system to track their student's progress. They were more interested in apps, and ways to help their students learn at home.

I wasn't surprised that the older a student gets the less teach-to-home communication gets. Like the article says, there are more teachers involved with your students. I also think, in my own person experience, my parents raised me in a way that I was responsible for keeping my grades up, and performing well. I still could come to them for help, and I also knew if I tried to hide a poor grade, I'd get in more trouble. I grew up with a stay at home mother, who had 7 children, and a father that had to work.

Now, usually both parents are working, and they tend to have less time to spend with their children. The student-to-parent communication isn't as strong anymore, so I see their need/want for more teacher/school-to-parent communication.

This weeks material was very new to me, and honestly still digesting. I’ve heard of the Learning Theories that we discussed before but never really did an analysis on them. In my own learning, past and present, I have experienced them. In art education, I think both the behaviorist and cognitivist theory approach is the best for early learners, since they are developing their motor skills. However, I could see it being a determinant to play, and imagination. I could see younger students just wanting to copy the instructors example. This reminds me of my 7th grade art teacher. We had went on a trip to the mercer tile museum. Back in the classroom, she had demonstrated clay techniques and the different tools and what they do. Long story short, we had to create a tile that showed the animals we researched in another class. However, she told us what to do, how things should look and was very limiting on letting our imagination go wild. In the end we had 22 very similar looking tiles.

In higher level courses I believe that those two theories are important, but should only be used as a starting point. When a student reaches high school or college, they should be giving the tools, some may already possess those tools, but then free to construct their own path within the project guidelines.

I found the SWOT analysis very helpful to dissect each theory. That activity really helped me understand in “english” what each theory was about, strengths, weaknesses, and how/when to use them.

As someone that suffered with test anxiety, and a diagnosed short term memory, the KAHOOT activity was very stressful. I would not use this platform in a classroom for those reasons. During the class discussion I found it interesting that teachers have found that students have cheated, and also this platform became a race to be on top.

Learning Log 3
The song mobile challenge was very awkward for me, but that's because I HATE hearing my own voice. However, I feel this would be a great way to get students to get comfortable with hearing their voice, and the blabberize app has multiple uses. I could see it being a way to create their own song that talks about historical events. It reminded me of a song “After Ever After” by Jon Cozart. Although, these songs may not be appropriate in education, they have some historical accuracy based of Disney princesses.

Like the previous weeks theories, the Tech Integration strategies were new to me. My group looked at the SAMR integration. This is a slow integration theory involves improvements slowly and can provide a lot of data, which the people in our scenario wanted.

Our discussion about technology integration was interesting, things I have never considered, and things I take for granted in Higher Education. I learned that some schools such has bethlehem may not have the infrastructure for all classrooms to handle mobile devices. Things such as maintenance and future growth, I can see being a big issue, especially with constant technology advances. The accessibility is something that is a huge factor, if students don’t have a 1:! Device, or don’t have internet at home, I could see it frustrating and limiting for the student.

Obviously, one thing that is important in having the right amount of security so student don’t access inappropriate thing. Another issue with the mobile apps would be the minors privacy. Some parents might be worried about their child’s information out on the web. A work around would be to create a classroom account, but that may cause issues with students accidently erasing other students work.

The design think process is something I realized I had been taught back in my undergrade, but a bit more structured. Empathy is something I honestly have had trouble understanding. We throw this term around as much as artist use the word ephemeral. These terms often seem to be used in correctly. When thinking of the upcoming challenge, its hard for me to think of an app that would include some sort of empathy for students since I'm not a teacher.

I think its more useful for me to think of an app that can address a need in my day to day work life. Something that could improve a process, and event expained the process to reach different audiences. One thing I am think of is an alumn volunteer tool kit, such as Penn's tool kit. However, we have something similar, but we don't have a platform that could help with our volunteer awards process, and activity tracker.

After reading the article on ADA complience, I worry that the app builders may not allow for such accommedations. So it will be important to make sure I at least try.

Looking through the Playbook, I think this is a great resource to use for a lot of design issues, and could be adapted for multiple uses. However, I do find it slightly overwhelming
