This great picture that was captured is of Nixon and Mao Zeodong (chairman of the Chinese communist party) shaking hands. An incredibly significant moment to witness, regarding that we've had such diplomatic estrangement since 1949. When President Nixon and I first arrived in Beijing, the initial thing we did was meet with Mao Zedong, who also led the Chinese revolution in 1949.We were also delighted to speak with the Premier, Zhou Enlai. When we met with him we were able to discuss international issues, and what steps we could take to solve them. We also discussed the underlying issue with Taiwan, and what our thoughts on were the topic.
Visiting China was definitely a success for detente. After such a long time of being, and feeling, so separate and distant from China, we were able to come to terms with each other as two nations. We left with better diplomatic relations, and a positive relationship with a long -term enemy.

This moment was very significant, not only seeing these two leaders (and their wives) together, but seeing these two flags next to each other. Knowing they are united. President Nixon and I traveled to China to possibly create a friendship with them. If not a friendship, then to just get rid of the bad blood that boiled between us for decades. And to possibly even re-establish our diplomatic relations. Both Nixon and I came to the realization that communism wasn't affecting us directly, so there was no need to force so many nations to be democratic. At least not yet. One of the major reasons we traveled to China was so get the attention of the Soviet Union, so they could notice that China was being reasonable/negotiable in meeting with the U.S., and they'd possibly negotiate meeting with us, and their tensions towards us would cool down.
Some factors or issues that could have limited our success with Detente in China could have been the fact that China has always had a hatred for the U.S., which may make them hesitant in establishing a relationship with us, or negotiating any terms. An event that could have limited our success was the Vietnam War. Nixon had only recently began the reduction of troops on the Chinese sight, so China may still be hostile and defensive towards us because of the war.

This is a picture I took of Nixon down in South Vietnam, talking to U.S. troops.President Nixon and I made a short, but somewhat effective visit toe South Vietnam in 1969. We traveled to South Vietnam to discuss U.S. troops reduction, as well as discussing possible changes in military tactics.
Traveling to Vietnam was one of the less successful trips for President Nixon and I, in regards to detente. Although our intent was discuss troop reductions, that idea went hand-in-hand with ending the war. And, unfortunately the war continued for another three years after our visit, which shows that our trip, wasn't as successful as we had hoped.

This is another picture captured of Nixon talking to U.S. troops in South Vietnam. President Nixon and I made an unscheduled, five-hour, visit to South Vietnam. We met with President Nguyen Van Thieu and we discussed our plans for the war moving forward. Then, we met up with many of our own american troops and talked to them. It was a great thing to do.
A big, and clear, factor that could have prevented detente from being successful, which is probably did, was the fact that the war was still continuing in North Vietnam. Although they are separate, we're still in a war, and people from their country still died due to a war that we were involved in. So, the continuation of the war definitely could have made them very hesitant towards discussing anything with us. Or even letting us in their country.

This is a photo of President Nixon and USSR leader Leonid Brezhnev. Nixon and I traveled to the Soviet Union to discuss some sort of agreement, or settlement with them. Either regarding weapons, or anything else. We wanted to be on better terms with the Soviet Union, since we had gotten to better terms with China.
There were many differing factors that definitely could have limited detente from being a success. One of the major ones being the amount of conflict we've had with the USSR throughout the Cold War, especially during 60s. The Soviet Union and the U.S. haven't had good relations since about WWII, and that's something that probably led to our unsuccessful results with them.

When Nixon and I first arrived in the Soviet Union, we visited the Polymetic Institute of Minsk. After that, we met up with president Leonid Brezhnev. When we met up with him, we discussed a number of agreements. We had even discussed talks of a joint space flight planned for 1975. One of the most significant things we did was discuss the SALT (Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty) Treaty. This was one of the most significant things ever done. We'd signed an agreement, limiting the amount of weapons we were both allowed to produce.
Traveling to the Soviet Union had success, but also not some success. We were able to come to many agreements, and talks of agreements with the Soviet Union. Unfortunately though, many of those plans actually fell through.
