I have much empathy toward people who are under a lot of medication, suffering from sicknesses caused by harmful bacteria. Some have to take many kinds of antibiotics to come across one that will be effective. I believe this is both relevant and timely given the evolution of so many bacteria and the large number of epidemics today.

These words had been foreign to me before I turned the age of 12. When I was younger, I've always thought that antibiotics were some sort of black magic that would instantly fight and win your immune battles for you. I learned to see it in a different light. In my case, infection was my "close friend."It stuck close to me during my childhood days and arose during special occasions. Since the first time antibiotics have been introduced to me, I would consume amoxicillin each time I get an infection. These infections include even the most common diseases such as colds. Little did I know that I was already slowly helping the bacteria grow stronger and develop resistance, and putting my long-term health in danger. After being educated by my mother, who has a degree in medicine, about the potential harmful effects of overuse of antibiotics, I have come to avoid antibiotics when possible, or any sort of medicine for that matter. Being a person with the fear of having diseases caused by strains of bacteria that are antibiotic resistant, I have always sought alternative cures to diseases. Upon being given the opportunity to conduct an investigatory project in school, I took this as a chance to research on possible alternatives to commercially and widely used antibiotics. If they are exposed to too much antibiotics, bacteria can develop resistance to these antibiotics. Another kind of antibacterial must be used when the bacterium is able to survive from a certain type. This goes on until it cannot be treated anymore.

With poverty rates being especially high in the Philippines, health problems have become abundant and there is no doubt that a lot of diseases will perpetuate. Infections from these diseases are also one of the major causes of death in the Philippines, its effects will hopefully be mitigated by this study so that better opportunities for my fellow Filipino brothers and sisters may come.
