However, it also has some benefits. For exanple, you would feel proud of saving the environment by reusing things, since less trash gets burned in the incinerator. However, I feel that many freegans seem to have increased their consumerism since their conversion. They consume, not by buying, but by finding or receiving.

Their dumpster diving expeditions produce an almost drug-like high, no different than what conventional consumer shopping gives a shopaholic. If you replace the word “find” with “buy”, the thinking and behaviours are essentially the same. It’s just that one involves the exchange of money.
If the intent was truly to reduce consumption (i.e, anti-consumerism), there should be a reluctance to possess the item, a desire to pass it on to those who truly need it, and an outcry to reduce its demand and production. And althoughFreegans decry capitalism, but they are still benefiting from it. They say they don’t like waste, but rely on others to be wasteful to continue in their ways. Many of them operate under the guise of environmentalism, but when you talk to them, they mostly want to tell you about their sensational finds and how thrilling it was to get their first branded handbag. 

Many of them say they are reducing harm to the environment, but as one blogger put it, “Just because one picks up something for free that has been discarded, and doesn’t directly give money to the corporation which produced it, doesn’t make the production of that item harmless. Due to the decrease in the demand for food, farmers would not earn as much as they do not sell as many crops, which would then lead to the loss of livelihood of some farmers. 
Since the freegans do not pay for their food, they would be paying less taxes, that would cause a decrease in the country's economy. Due to the decrease in taxes, the government may not have enough fund for building the country, this causing the country to be less developed. 
Since there is lesser wastage, the government/country would not have to burn as much trash and find land to store those trash. That would help the government to save money on burning the trash and paying for the land used to store the burned trash, thus helping the economy.

On the other hand, less food wasted also leads to less food needed, so the some farms that make jobs for people as farmers might have to close down. With less jobs in industrial areas and agriculture, more unemployed people would flood the streets, which might lead to Singapore's economy faltering. However, using these items, which, unpleasantly put were picked up from the rubbish bins, may give one some health problems. Food which were found may have been thrown away because it was contaminated, and the same goes to other goods. Many times people have their reasons for throwing away what may seem "perfectly fine" and "brand new" on the surface, until the bacteria that lie inside are seen under a microscope. Take for example mattresses. They might have been urinated on before or are usually contaminated somehow. If freegans are not conscious enough about hygiene, they may contract some contagious illness. More commonly, they may get food poisoning from certain food which may be contaminated as well.

Contamination can easily occur as the name "dumpster diving" suggests that the items are placed close to a dumpster, which is filled with bacteria. Stray animals may also urinate on those items and insects may also start living in those items. Though they may sterilise the items after collecting it, some bacteria are extremely hard to kill and there would most probably be bacteria left, some of which may be extremely harmful. As bacteria can't be seen with the naked eye, it us close to impossible to tell if there r any harmful organisms living on it unless you own a microscope or some sort. 
Although there's downsides to dumpster diving, there are also positive sides, for example, it cultivates a healthy lifestyle through going around the neighborhood looking for unwanted/preloved goods, promoting exercise. The food found are mainly vegetables, which promotes a healthy diet.
