"In the neighborhood, if you go out at night, you might get yourself shot"(Neri 6).
"Yummy belonged to a gang called the Black Disciples, and anyone who was rival on one of their streets was gonna hear from the Black Disciples. They ran the neighborhood" (Neri 8).
"Social services sent him to live with his granny. She had a whole mess of grandkids living there" (Neri 23).

This shows that Yummy has been growing up in a very difficult area, where he clearly has never had the correct guidance to teach him right from wrong. Growing up, he has been influenced by a gang with bad values, and like them, has decided to get what he wants through crime, and being forced to live with his grandmother with many other kids, he has no choice but to fend for himself. He has spent his life trying to please those that do not believe in virtue, which would resultantly lead to his being a very reckless and unpredictable type of person.

This an important time in the graphic novel because this is what the whole problem is in Yummy. Yummy Sandifer is only an 11-year-old, but actions and people in his life have influenced these intense events in his life. He is now on the run for being responsible for the murder of fourteen-year-old girl. Yummy's life before was never great because of his mother's abusive actions and he has always been forgotten and involved in a gang.

His is a really bad kid who has been to jail a lot. He has a bad record. He also grew up in the bad part of town.

Yes and no because Yummy has probably not been told how to act right, who to hang out with but everyone should know that murder is not the right thing to do in any situation.
