Why I chose this topic?

I chose depression as my topic choice because it has been a controversial issue among all ages of people from the beginning of time. I have personally been affected by this mental illness and I am aware of the affects it has on the important aspects of your life. It is an illness that can lead to death and that is severe enough to bring this subject to surface at any chance given. This illness especially affects college students because we are facing adversity balancing our work and school. Many students even tend to drop out of universities because their mental state isnt strong enough to maintain it all at once. It is a very powerful illness that can consume an individual if not treated properly.

Depression Among College Students

This topic is especially important to college students because it negatively affects students and their futures. College level courses are difficult and when you are battling a mental illness like depression, it feels impossible to take on both. Depression makes the obstacles that you have to face through college x10 more difficult. To maintain good scores in college, you have to keep yourself motivated and driven and this is we find many students dropping out. The social pressure along with the educational standards can be top much on the plate for certain individuals. Your academic performance decreases when you are dealing with depression because you are trying to maintain a healthier mindset at the same time of meeting dealines and turning your focus towards other things.

Age group that experiences depression most

Depression is a common mental illness that affects over 7% of our overall population. Depression is most common in ages 18-25 and this is typically when individuals are attending college. The age group is important to this project specifically because it proves that young adults are affected most by this illness and it happens to fall over into our education. This statistic is also important because it brings the attention to the individuals in this age group who are balancing a lot in their lives and spreads awarness to those individuals. I believe the age group shows correlation to how much social pressure is put on people that fall in this age group. We should continue raising awareness for not only young adults but anyone who is suffering from this illness.

Article relating to Depression

This article is essential because it is giving us insight on modern times and how depression has spiked even further than expected. We are experiencing a time where we have to be social distanced and this has been a complicating process for college students especially. We are adapting to a new nature of being educated virtually and on top of that, we cannot socialize. We feel robbed out of our college experience and this can lead individuals to feel as if they are doing it all for nothing. This article explains how depression rates have increased as the corona virus has wiped out in person classes completely. A mental health expert included that "that risk is significantly decreased when students receive support, including support through online mental health resources, which are in high demand at the current moment". College students are not provided with the necessary support nor guidance to successfully cope with college level work.

Video clip regarding depression

Matthew is a student at Rice University and through this video he gives his insight on how depression affects him as a college student. He describes how he has "the good days". These days are simply being able to complete the tasks that are given to him and stay out of bed the entire day to complete them. He explains how it feels like an invisible battle that cannot be won. He never openly spoke about his illness because it was not socially accepted. Seeing the story being told through someone elses perspective really opened my eyes to how I have been silent because I have fell into the same category as matthew. Matthews parents actually spoke on the intensity that matthew constantly felt and how that even affected them. It is very important to reach out and tell your story because there are people out there who are looking for someone to relate to on a deeper level. This video spoke volumes for me as a college student because it is relatable and many other students could benefit from it by not feeling alone through depression.
