Fort Toulouse was built in 1717 by the French, and served as a trading post for 46 years. There were many families lived in the fort, but the largest had 12 children! That's a lot of children. Around 1812 the Americans built a new fort over the old site of Fort Toulouse to serve as a garrison during the Creek Indian War. Today, you can see a replica of Ft. Toulouse in Wetumpka AL.

The conditions and events that led up to the Creek Indian War, which resulted in the Fort Mims massacre on August 30, 1812, began before the start of the War of 1812. In the early 1800´s the loosely confederated tribes of the Creek nation numbered somewhere between 18,000 to 24,000 persons and primarily inhabited present day Alabama and Western Georgia. Their territory was generally bounded by the Tennessee River on the north, the Gulf of Mexico on the south, the Oconee River on the east, and the Tombigbee River on the west and comprised about 300 squuare miles.

In 1717 fort Toulouse served as the eastern-most outpost of the french colony of Louisiana. The french intended that the fort secure the friendship of the populous Creek confederacy and make french policy known, while keeping the soldiers and interests of the British empire out of the region. The Alibamu Indians, who were a part of the Creek confederacy, invited the french to build the fort here. Most creek villages remained officially neutral so they could bargain with the British and french for better price in deerskin. British and French rivalries came head with out a breakout of the french and Indian war in 1754.
