But what if there was a technology that could guide you how to properly treat a type of wound using biomarkers? About 2% of patients in the world deal with chronic wounds, with 6.7 million people in the United States suffer from ulcers, and non-healing surgical wounds (Hossain et al, 2024). A lot of times medical professionals rely on previous medical experiences and knowledge to try to treat wounds, but even that can lead to use and improper treatment of antibiotics, causing a antibiotic drug resistance. The smart bandages contain biochemical sensors that measure temperature, pH levels, moisture levels, and the existence of certain biomarkers and/or bacteria (Hossain et al, 2024).

There have been many times where my coworkers and I have relied on previous wound exposure experience to help take care of a patient's pressure injury, or have heavily relied on a wound care nurse to come by and see the patient. With a smart bandage, it would help prevent delayed wound healing and may even decrease inappropriate antibiotic usage. We are taught to turn the patient every two hours, using barrier ointments, or using pressure relief overlays, but it is still not always enough to do these measures.
