The use of this padlet (I chose timeline as a theme) allows me to share with you my hopes for, and then experiences of, the module. Reflection is a crucial part of learning. As Socrates said over 2000 years ago 'the unexamined life is not worth living'. In This space, and with you as fellow travellers, I expect to encounter new ways of thinking and alternate approaches to life than my own. These will come from each of us in the group. Right now, it will be good to try and establish and ethos of education - a starting point perhaps?

Session One - The Helicopter

The first session of this module is something I enjoy, it is a challenge to depict the challenges of something not quite clear-cut. What do we mean by 'hitting the wall in a yacht?' for crying out loud? Thankfully, almost everyone had watched The Truman Show and that gave us a basis to begin that exploration. We also explored Tao of Teaching and two types of imagination, Alan Watts and the proposal 'what if money were no object'. The breakout rooms had some success, and I like the idea of the Zoom space for this. Each group is invisible, the motivation and energy must come from each other. Each of us must respond to the concerns of others, the lack of engagement in some cases, the difference in opinions, and that killer - lethargy! In the group, invisibility can be painful for me - but I appreciate turning cameras off works for some. Every year I learn something from the modules I teach, and this year I am learning about the significance of family. I think this may be a crucial part of this year's presentations. I came straight to 'class' after a talk with Ragged Universities Alex and the brilliant Antonia Darder, I was energised and excited. I got to see that in some of the discussions in our group too, and it reminds me why education is important. Fitting for this module!. As always, our biggest challenge will be responsibility and seeking in our reflections that which we can change. To change, we must know why before we do anything else.
Next week, 'No Teacher' session, one of my favourites. I have been talked into doing a presentation myself, though not as a teacher (Ranciere, I think I will choose a section of the "Ignorant Monkey' chapter). I feel good about what is to come, this is the most challenging and most rewarding module in my opinion. Let's see what happens.
(The Helicopter - look it up!)

Session One Addendumn- Vampires, Trolls , Dreams and Gonzo

It occured to me, not immediately, but we ended with dreams. Are dreams a viable step in the right direction? Not imagination that can often become of the childlike variety, but real imagined lives of power that we first dream, then make come true? Energy Vampires/ Grey Vampires feed on these dreams, we have to be wary. I talked about this at a keynote at Bristol College on Tuesday, people sent lots of positive responses too, this makes sense to people I think. We all feel that, the desire to dream and follow that through, coupled with those grey cloud/ grey vampire enthusiasm murderers. How do we stop them, what is the garlic & wooden stake that repels these people in our lives?

You cannot sit and watch learning that asks you to get up and move (You can, but nothing happens). I have posted the Challenge here.
