  • What suppressed wants, needs, and even memories force their way through symbolically in hallucinations for Macbeth?  
  • What unconscious desires come through Lady Macbeth's behavior? 

    •    1. Macbeth's hallucination of the bloody dagger revealed his unconscious desire to kill Duncan and steal his position as king.

       2.  Lady Macbeth's unconscious desire to admit her sins and face the just consequences for the crime were revealed when she acted out the murder in her sleep, basically admitting to the crimes.

      • Macbeth had just killed Duncan and his guards. He brings the murder weapons back to his room instead of leaving them so that the guards will be the ones framed.

    • Analyze this passage from the Psychoanalytic perspective. (Hint: What is Macbeth repressing?)
      • Macbeth is repressing the fact that he is still human and knows killing people is wrong. He is in shock after killing three people, and he is ignoring his natural human compassion.

    Macbeth and Lady Macbeth have repressed and unconscious desires that they don't allow to surface. Although Macbeth had always been a "worthy gentlemen", he envied the king and had an unconscious desire to be king. His repressed impulses were then tempted to the surface by the witches and he was led on a path of greed. Lady Macbeth, on the other hand, was faced with so much guilt after Duncan's death that she forcibly suppressed the memories of the murder. Her guilt later caused her act out the murder in her sleep.
