Plaque can buildup on the inner walls. The build up consists of cholesterol and other material (U.S. National Library of Medicine, n.d.).Therefore, the buildup causes the heart muscle to not get enough blood or oxygen needed to function, which can lead to a heart attack (U.S. National Library of Medicine, n.d.). Coronary artery disease weakens the heart muscle and leads to heart failure (U.S. National Library of Medicine, n.d.).

For many individuals, CAD can be prevented through lifestyle interventions such as increased exercises, healthy eating, and avoidance of certain substances that are linked to a higher risk of CAD (Hajar, 2017). However, there are still some uncontrollable risk factors including age, sex, family history, and race (Hajar, 2017). Numerous tests may be utilized in order to identify the presence of CAD, and if CAD is identified it may be treated through a combination of various pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions. Some of these interventions include the use of medication as well as the performance of surgery to address underlying issues. The success of treatment is dependent upon a number of factors such as overall fitness and the presence of conditions other than CAD. It is important to emphasize that the best means of addressing CAD is through preventative strategies that focus on creating a lifestyle that is healthy and sustainable.
