Erikson Stage 3: Inititave vs. Guilt

Erikson's third stage is called Inititave versus Gulit, the age range is 3-6 years. This is the age where imagination really comes alive, they begin to imagine roles and new games, things like dragon tag, or bird blast. They learn Inititave and take a sort of control over their environment. They start thinking for themselves heavily, shown commonly by the classic string of why questions parents and most likely older siblings are familer with. In the event that a caregiver/guradian discurige this newfound joy and mental process, or even dismiss efforts made entirely, this can very easily lead to feelings of guilt. Things like self doubt and a lack of Inititave are detrimental this early on in life.

A successful stage three leads to creativity and willpower, otherwise is can lead to lazyness, lack of self-care, low creaticvity, and has been shown in select studies to effect afantasia (The way people think).

A well known charecters who failed this would be Charlie Brown (Peanuts), Nevile Longbottom (Harry Potter), and Piglet (Winnie the Pooh). Lots of insecurity and expecting failure/ridicule. On the other hand well known figures would be Tony Stark (Marvel Comics), Luke Skywalker (Star Wars), and Spongebob Squarepants (Spongebob Squarepants).

All in all this matters because a unsuccessful or badly treated stage three can line you up for hard habits that would lead you to stay where you are in life, and not strive for what you want or even need.
