The story circles around the main protagonist Lucy Moderatz who is played by Sandra Bullock. Lucy who sells tickets for the Chicago L-train is a bright eyed single lady who has a major crush on a stranger she sees everyday at the train station.

Tall, dark and handsome, Lucy fantasizes of the day she'll be able to finally introduce herself to the handsome stranger named Peter who is played by Peter Gallagher. 

Alas, mother luck is on her side and she finally gets her chance of introducing herself, albeit in the most unlikely of scenarios. 

On the Eve of Christmas as Lucy begrudgingly goes to work, she sees Peter once again. However, she was too captivated by his handsomeness to say anything and quickly regrets it. However, shortly after that, she noticed Peter being  mugged by a group of hooligans who then pushes him onto the train tracks after a scuffle. 

Lucy immediately leap to the opportunity and came to his rescue. Realizing that he had lost consciousness, Lucy futilely tried to wake him up by saying, "Mister, there's a train coming, and it's fast!"

Alas, she grabbed him and rolled away from the train tracks to beneath the platform as the train whizzes by in the last second.

They were then brought to the hospital where Peter was rushed into the ER and Lucy was denied visiting rights. That was until a nurse overheard her muttering to herself that she was going to marry that man and assumed that Lucy and Peter were engaged. 

Peter's family, The Callaghan's soon rush into the scene all worried about their son and introduced to Lucy as Peter's fiancée. Lucy attempted to resolve that misunderstanding but the family was too captivated by her that she felt bad for ruining the moment for them especially for grandma Glynis.

However, Peter's brother, John notices that something was amiss and proceeded to interrogate Lucy at any chance he could get. This spooked Lucy and she had to seek advice from Peter's godfather, Jack Warden who actually knew her dirty little secret after he accidentally eaves dropped on her confession to Peter in the hospital before that. 

He advised Lucy to keep up the act for a little while longer as he knows that Lucy only meant well and that she was a really nice girl. In fact, he felt that she was the nicest person who had appeared in the family's life in years thus he told her he would handle things on Peter's family's end although Lucy was getting quite irritated by John's constant badgering, interrogation and snooping around. Lucy also gets caught in more tangled lies such as her neighbor's son lying about their relationship and Peter's younger sister spilling the tea on a false pregnancy which made it even harder for Lucy to come clean with the truth.

Soon enough, Lucy and John started to develop feelings for each other and John tried to negotiate with his comatose brother for her over a game of cards. Things got even more awkward when Peter regained consciousness and has no memories of Lucy or whether he liked pudding. The family quickly convinces him that he was experiencing amnesia thus buying Lucy more time in living this fantasy of hers.

As her dreams of marrying Peter begins to materialize, Lucy realizes that she and John were mutually attracted to each other and thus she asks him for a reason that she should not marry his brother. John sighs with resign and tells her that he can't give her a reason.

A few days go by and Lucy finds herself walking down the aisle only to confess of her grievous crimes towards the Callagher family. Everyone was in shock except for John and the godfather thus giving Lucy the chance to slip away unnoticed.

She returns to her lonely apartment and single life once again with her cat. With everything seemingly back to normal, Lucy goes about her day job as the train ticketeer once again but like every rom-com ever made, life is never done with you until you've had a happy ending.

John swoops in to save the day when he dropped an engagement into the coin tray. Lucy's gaze shifts from the ring to a very happy crowd of Callaghers and she says yes!

The character's hopeless romantic inclination is built from this moment on and further solidified as the audience is shown a glimpse of a handsome lad Lucy is crushing on. 

Lucy's problem is narrated as her holding on to wishful thinking that she will finally be able to introduce herself to the dashing stranger she sees everyday at the platform. 

Meanwhile back at her own apartment, Lucy tries to set up her Christmas tree but slips and lets go of the string thus sending her tree crashing down into the window of the unit below her. She then meets the building manager and is introduced to his slightly creepy son, Joe Jr who immediately falls for her.

Shortly after, Lucy goes out for a roadside hot dog where she bumps into her supervisor, Jerry who tries to nominate her as employee of the month and requests for her to work the platform on Christmas Eve as she in the only one without family in Chicago.

Begrudgingly she takes the shift and watches forlornly as families pass through the station together. Suddenly, she hears a strangers voice greet her and it was her secret crush who had wished her Merry Christmas. Lucy was dumbfounded and lost for words. 

As she has scolds herself for messing up their first encounter, Peter gets into a scuffle with a group of muggers who later push him onto the train tracks.

The story line becomes more convoluted as Lucy is introduced as Peter's fiancee to his family members and isn't given an opportunity to reveal the truth. 

There were multiple scenes and character interactions that complicated Lucy's initial predicament. She told them all about how she was mistaken for Peter's fiancee, how they had barely any interaction beyond the ticketing booth and that she was falling for John instead. The whole church gasps in disbelieve, the Callaghers are lost for words, but ultimately grandma Glynis was the most disappointed of them all.

Then comes in Peter's girlfriend who tries to tell him off and that their engagement was off because she was actually married.

Looking up, she noticed John and the Callaghans beaming widely behind him as he asked her to marry him. Lucy invites him into the booth but not without buying a train ticket and that's where John finally gets on one knee and proposes to her.

Winter is often associated with Christmas and Christmas with family time. Thus with Lucy's character as a lonely single girl in Chicago, it made more sense for her to leap at the first chance of having a family rather than her coming off as rather stalker-ish.

With the characteristics of an innocent and doe eyed girl. Sandra Bullock really brought to live the role of Lucy in a sweet and innocent manner. Had this film be made in the middle of summer in LA, Lucy's character could have been easily misunderstood as one with and obsessive stalking inclination.

The comical antics of the Callaghans in their candid expressions and behaviors that are done simply out of love also creates a rather warm and homely atmosphere, perfect for the lonesome Lucy who had lost her father a year ago.

To any normal family or individual, having an individual suddenly introduce themselves as your future in-law might have raised some red flags on them. But not to the nutty and warm Callaghans, They were simply enthralled by Lucy's kindness and bravery in rescuing their son.

Besides that, the social status between Peter and the rest of his family was made apparent through the appearances of their homes. Staying true to Lucy's imagery of Peter as a well off man, his apartment was stylishly furnished albeit minimalist. The Callaghan family house was shot at a charming turn-of-the-century house in suburban La Grange, Illinois whereas Peter's apartment was in Chicago's Swanky Lake Point Tower according to this website.

All these not so subtle sets added into the emptiness Lucy was trying to fill within herself; a sense of belonging and status. That was until I stumbled upon this article regarding their characters outfits.

Lucy was comfortably dressed in baggy sweaters and sweatpants, except for a few scenes where she was in jeans. 

Peter was basically in a comfortable hospital gown through out the movie except for the times he was conscious. His shirt under his jacket during the wedding was also a men's pajama top.

And even Lucy's landlord was wearing a pajama top under his comfortable jacket.

Thus, it seemed like the wardrobe stylist and director was having fun with the movie's title "While You Were Sleeping", by making them dress up in pajamas or comfortable lounge wear, including Lucy's wedding gown that could have very well been a nightgown if it wasn't for the little rosette in front.

However, I found myself loving the movie within it's first four minutes already. Lucy's monologue on her childhood memories with her dad, the nostalgia in her voice paired with melancholic visuals made it very captivating and intrigued me to watch on.

Albeit it's cheesy rom-com bits such as the predictable plot twists, story progression, character quirks and dialogue lines, my dormant hopeless romantic side was still piqued by it. 

But how does this relate to this Creative Writing subject? This movie had a clear cut story line with plot elements that were easily identifiable. The scenes were very elaborately thought out with clever placements of objects or attention grabbers such as the rocking chair in John's truck versus the antique settee Lucy was going to receive from his parents as a wedding gift.

In today's Millennial movement on being culturally sensitive or "woke" as they like to call it, the recreation of this movie would definitely spark a huge controversy on Lucy's obsession towards Peter.

Moreover, the original plot was written with it's roles reversed but was scrapped as it made the male protagonist seem to predatory.

Hence, this movie was created in the perfect period of the 90s where things were seemingly simpler and people were not enraged by the smallest of things. It portrays the socially acceptable innocence of women shed in a positive light (Lucy being encouraged by Peter's godfather to continue her bluff as she was the best thing to happen to the family in a long while).

Besides that, I was surprised to learn that this movie was Directed by Jon Turteltaub has he's predominantly known for his action packed movies such as National Treasure (2004) and The Meg (2018). 

Thus, this rom com was very brilliantly executed and it feels like a cheeky materialization of Turteltaub's soft spot for romance and comedy.
