So that we can make the most of our time at NCCAT--as well as begin to build supportive networks with other educators across North Carolina--let's get to know one another. Please share where you live, and one thing professional, personal and peculiar.

Professional: I am part of the faculty at the North Carolina Center for
the Advancement of Teaching (NCCAT), where I design and conduct seminars and other programs for public school teachers.

Personal: When I was a student at UNC Chapel Hill I loved to spend time in the main library's NC Collection doing research about a book I was writing. It was here I realized the important of primary sources. It was here I realized how much we learn about the present from studying the past. My book Ocracokers was eventually published and I donated all the proceeds to Ocracoke School to purchase elementary literature books.

Peculiar: I still live in the same house where I grew up and where my mother was born and raised. While renovating the bathroom in the mid-1990s, I discovered a scrap of newspaper in the wall from the same year my mother was born: 1918.

Professional: I serve as the K-12 Social Studies & 6-12 English Language Arts Coordinator for Chapel Hill- Carrboro City Schools. This is my 17th year serving the students and teachers in North Carolina public schools. I am thrilled to be a presenter for the upcoming seminar.
Personal: As a child, I would line up my dolls and "teach school." Even though I am no longer in the classroom, I will always consider myself a teacher. I am passionate about providing educators the tools, resources, and professional learning needed to impact student achievement, particularly in regards to literacy.

Peculiar: I consider myself a "clam whisperer." I grew up in Wilmington and have spent lots of time on and in the water. If there is a clam in my vicinity, I will find it! In a prior trip to Ocracoke, I personally dug up 90 clams, and then, of course, had a delicious feast that evening.

Professional: I am a middle school and high school Social Studies teacher at Asbury Academy which is alternative school in Lincoln County. This is my first year at Asbury, but my 22nd year teaching.
Personal: I have recently become very interest in genealogy after discovering a primary source of a distant relative about a 1971 trip to Gaston/Lincoln County. From this document, I have learned that my family is from the area before migrated west to Missouri. In fact, I am in the process of discovering the location of my great grandfather's farm and perhaps upsetting an apple cart of historical lore in Gaston County. I am looking to explore genealogy in my classes as students' connection to history can only be a benefit to my job. I am very excited about an introduction to the online resources as it should help my personal journey and my professional journey.
Peculiar: I am a history geek-but can't stand reading much history anymore. I would rather see and 'touch' history -- as in visiting historical sites and explore documents. I have never been to Ocracoke Island before so am very excited to see the island.

I am a huge fan of the Tar Heels and Panthers. I love football and I can watch it all day Sunday. I'll probably be a little tired on Tuesday after staying up late on Monday after watching the Panthers game.
Peculiar: I love the old Scooby Doo Cartoons. I have all the new movies,

Professional: I've been teaching mathematics for about a decade. I didn't begin until the age of 32 after doing lots of other stuff; including (but not limited to) biomedical physics researcher, electrician, DJ, and bartender. I was lateral entry but earned my Master of Arts in Teaching from Duke University 6 years ago. I've done a lot of work integrating math and art curriculum with both the Nasher and the NC Museums of Art. http://DanTeachesMath.net
Personal: I've always been a tinkerer. I believe I was a "maker" before it was cool. The latest project was a birdhouse with a raspberry pi powered wifi camera that uploads live to youtube. It was a birthday present for my wife but I believe our 2 year old will get the most enjoyment from it. Also, I'm a big Duke fan and recently made the trip to Notre Dame with my son and Dad to watch the Blue Devils beat the Fighting Irish...which was a happy outcome we definitely weren't expecting!
Peculiar: I have a huge vinyl (record) collection (does that count as a primary source?) that spans everything from classical to jazz to twangy country to hip-hop to indie rock. My two year old enjoys dragging his stool up to my turntables, putting on a record and doing some scratching.
