The assassination of JFK propelled Congress to jump into action. The U.S. needed a clear way to determine presidential succession, especially with the reality of the Cold War and its technologies. Within 3 months, the House and the Senate agreed on the wording of what would eventually become the 25th Amendment which is about presidential disability and succession. Section 1 of the 25th Amendment states that the Vice President becomes President when the position becomes vacant under three circumstances: death, resignation, and removal from office. It was passed by Congress on July 6th, 1965 and ratified February 10th, 1967.
