This song tells us the horror felt by an observer of the Troubles in Northern Ireland, in particular on the Bloody Sunday incident in Derry ( he second-largest city in Northern Ireland) where British troops shot and killed unarmed civil rights protesters and bystanders.

Also, the lyrics reject hate and revenge as a response: "There's many lost, but tell me who has won"; " How long must we sing this song?

When U2 performed the song on the War Tour, there was some fear on how the crowd would react, especially their Irish fans.

There were some who saw the song as a glorification of the Troubles and a call for revolution.

But it isn't the real meaning of the song: Bono introduced the song by saying, “This song is not a rebel song. This song is Sunday Bloody Sunday.” This statement, with the white flags that waved behind the band on stage, bring an intention for a peaceful solution.

The first time that I listened to this song, I was on a travel to Barcelona with my parents to see a U2 concert.
I felt in love with it. I think the rythm was so different to other songs and very powerful!
Obiously, I didn't know the meaning of the song but later, my mother explains me what really was the "Bloody Sunday". Since that moment, I have liked this song even more.
