Before I start I have to admit that Malak story made my eyes teary. I can't accept that in these days we still have to witness such tragedies involving children and their parents. I have a story myself to tell about Ade, a young man coming from Nigeria the West part of Africa. Ade told me he fled from his country due to the civil war, the death squad invaded his home killing one of his brothers, he managed to save his life by escaping on a boat which took him to the southern coasts of Italy. He now works as a waiter in a pizzeria and dreams of getting married with a girl he met while working. He has a secondary school degree and his english command is very good. I wish him all the luck with his life, he deserves happiness just like all the human beings populating planet earth, this last statement should be written in every Constitution of every civilized country.

In the past couple of years, I have had newly arrived migrants in my classes and more and more are coming. They mainly come from Africa - Nigeria, Congo, Senegal, Ivory Coast.. Most of them are not refugees since they have not fled war situations, but poverty. I remember one of them telling me that he had crossed the Sahara on a truck and it took almost two years to get to Lybia. And then there was the journey across the sea on a boat, but he wouldn't tell me about that! Another boy, whom I asked to tell me about his journey simply answered: "I'll tell you about that one day, but not now". I've never known: his journey had still not come to the end. A few days after our brief conversation he fled the comunity that hosted him.

I would like to share the story of two kids: sister and brother. "The girl with short hair and the boy with the yellow truck".
Those two kids had to be transferred from Mitilini (Lesvos) to a suitable hosting place. They had lost their parents.The girl was 10 years older than her brother. She was 15. So she had taken the role of mother and father, too. First and foremost she was the "protector" of her little brother and then she was feeling as a child, too.
However the most motivating words were about her hair.As she said few days before they leave, she decided to cut her long hair. It was a big change for her. Although she wanted to become a new person. She wanted to leave the past behind. She wanted to make a new beginning in her life. Someone could say that her action was a symbol of adulthood, a symbol of maturity.
From now on she would be the leader of her life and her brother's life not the innocent child of her parents. She was ready to take the responsibility of her choices and being always protective to her brother. On the other hand, the little boy during the journey had his big, yellow truck with him because it was the only one which could take him back to his country, Afganistan, with his parents without being scared anymore, as he said.
This was a story from Androniki, a member of "METADRASI" as she had experienced it.

Most migrants, in Pinerolo (TO), come from Africa, China, Syria, Sud-America. I teach as a primary teacher and most children are visibly touched by what they have seen during the journey. Many times they come out with incontrollable behaviour, but usually are just kids who have seen terrible things.

What strikes me about the testimonies heard is the value they give to 'feel in a safe place': to express their ideas without fear of retaliation, feel safe because there is a police service that protects free citizens. On the other hand the homesickness of little Malak remembering her school, her friends, the teacher that with her was always good and kind, makes us realize how strong the roots and attachment to the country own are. It is touching.

1.5 Journeys to Europe

I watched some videos about the topic in this section and some of them made me cry because now I know a bit more than before what really means to be on a journey to peace. Only because of this terrible experience our brothers and sisters live, we should do all that is possible to stop the war and all the crimes against humans. Children's stories are the most moving ones; these little boys and girls have the right to believe that their future will certainly be happier and maybe, why not, again in their mother countries

Some months ago I introduced some the firts video with Malak to my pupils and also the partner school pupils of our eTwinning project which has similar topic. I still remember my pupils reaction and how emotioned they got!! Then, we made some boats with paper handicrafts, wrote on them words that kids like Malak want and need to continue their lives and put them into our school's corridor to show their migration jurney. This reminds me the story of two young girs at the age of 13 and 14 who came to my school to attend the rythm gym clab. They were from Avganistan and they came to my city after a long journey, waiting from an NGO to find their parents and move on....They were very well educated, they new the English language and they were very kind. After staying here for about 5 months the NGO found their parents in Germany, prepared their papers and they left to meet them.

Although these videos are very significant. In particular, the second, that of the travel story of the Syrian girl of seven was very touching. Everyone should know where they are going to people making these journeys of hope, and I just try to imagine their happiness in being truly and finally free. These videos were really effective. Listening to migrant's stories is more impressive than reading some statistics. This is also nearer to my humanistic subjects, so using empathy as an educative method.
For migrants Rome is usually only a stop-over before going north towards country like Germany or Sweden. But in Rome and its countryside (I live here) there is a huge number of foreigners, because Rome is the capital and offers a lor of opportunities and many of them come here to join their local community.

According to the surveys of UNHCR, the UN agency for refugees, refugees landed in Europe, between January 1 and December 31, 2016, is 361,678, of which 181,405 in Italy and 173,447 in Greece. The countries most represented Europe-wide provenance are Syria (23%), Afghanistan (12%) and Nigeria (10%).

During my visit to the SPRAR "Luna Rossa" I met some young refugees.They don't like to talk about the journeys from their poor countries to ours because they were very painful .The volunteer who works with them told me that only after
a long time from their arrival they start telling their sad stories.

Journeys to Europe - Investigation activity

Almost all the migrants arriving in Italy through the port of Reggio Calabria, have done a long journey from Northern Africa to Libia and then to Italy. The journey is very long, dangerous and it costs a lot of money. The migrants' families still living in Africa have spent much money to make their relatives leave and this debt must be rapidly paid; for this reason the people coming from abroad, often try to have a job, as soon as possible, to help their families pay the debts. But it isn't easy to know about the journey itself from the migrants... it's a wound always bleeding and they never reply your questions. It takes time, you must live with them, learn from them about their culture and their life in the mother country. Once they feel you can be trusted, then the words arrive like a river you cannot stop from flowing.

The journey of Soleen Ibrahim
She is only 13 years old, but she bears in her memory the testimony of an uncertain life, of someone who has been forced to escape the country and in the future she intends to be a doctor "to help those who need it most". She lived in Mosul, her homeland, when the war started she was forced to flee with her family to a refugee camp in Greece. Her house was bombed, she still remembers the sound of gunfire near her school. She only had the time to take some clothes and her mobile, but in her memory she took her childhood friends, the teacher, her home and the memories of a life interrupted by the war.For this young Iraqi, the refugee status is not chosen, it is the result of circumstances beyond our control, such as wars and political instability. "We are normal people who have had to flee the war to find peace in another country," she explained.
The family (her grandparents, parents and four children) went to Turkey and made seven attempts to cross the Mediterranean to Greece. On one of the trips, the boat that carried her turned and more than 1000 people died in this crossing. “At night, the sea was like a road and we stayed in the water waiting for help. It only took me a while to die, but I did not give up, "she says. The family had to make the various attempts to reach Greece by land and the various ambushes undertaken by the Turkish police. Once they left at four in the morning and went on foot, without food and without water for two days until a bus stop. They thought the destination was Greece, but when the trip was over, a Turkish police bus came and took them back to Istanbul. This happened four times and the last time her grandmother and mother were beaten by the police. Only on the seventh attempt they managed to sail from Greece to Italy and then take a plane to Portugal.
Once here, the language was the main barrier to overcome and the difficult integration in a Portuguese school. Nine months later, Soleen says she feels happy and integrated, in Portugal. She speaks Portuguese and teaches Kurdish, Greek and Turkish to her classmates. She doesn’t exclude the possibility of returning to her country, but for now, she wants stay in Portugal. "After all, I was very lucky, the people I met are friendly and they just want to help me."

Migrants and refugees have experienced violence and near-death situations. It just make me so sad and anxious about how these people will overcome these experiences and feel they can start over. They need all of our support at least.

I have as story of family members to state. A story that seems out of a film, or a book.
A family member left his home, beginning of 20th century, because his father died and the mother remarried a hard man. At the time his home was not Greek Territory, but Turkish. He was working in an American company in Minor Asia when the genesite of Greeks happened in 1920s. He had to fled and he arrived in Syria, where he married a Greek Orthodox lady who had grown up in the area. He registered as a Greek living in the ares. His grandchildren had to fled the recent Syrian War and because he was never living in Greek territory they were not accepted in Greece as citizens. They had to go the same proccess as all the people coming from Syria. It is sad.
Now they are in Sweden, happy to be alive and homesick of the place they lived most of their lives Syria.
Each person, each family, is a different situation but a human being nontheless, deserving support and recognition.

My students reached Europe after a very long and exhausting journey. They come from western Africa and they moved for different reasons, war, persecution and poverty. They crossed part of the Sahara desert on overcrowded little van and on foot. They saw lots of their friends dying for dehidration and they risked their own lives. When they reached Libia (which was their goal) they have been put into prison because they didn't have any documents. You can imagine what was prison like! After six months the civil war broke out in Libia and they were freed but obliged to get on an unsafe boat and cross the Mediteranean. They reached Lampedusa and as minors they were sent to the various shelters on the Italian territory. They arrived in Lamezia Terme in the care of Comunità Lunarossa and its wonderful operators. On September 12th 2011, I met them in my classes

For each landing calling, before the eyes of the social and law enforcement operators, new scenarios, complex life stories and, unfortunately in some cases, death. Tens of hundreds immigrants, trying to escape from a situation of distress and deterioration, they go every day on our shores. They run away in search of a better fate, not losing hope and trying all out to ensure for themselves and their families a better life.

Συνολικά 607 πρόσφυγες και μετανάστες πέρασαν στα νησιά του βορείου Αιγαίου και καταγράφηκαν στα Κέντρα Υποδοχής και Ταυτοποίησης τις μέρες του Πάσχα. Συγκεκριμένα από το πρωί της Μεγάλης Πέμπτης μέχρι και σήμερα Τρίτη του Πάσχα, 418 πέρασαν στη Λέσβο, 69 στη Χίο και 120 στη Σάμο.

Συνολικά από την 1η Απριλίου μέχρι και σήμερα το πρωί στα νησιά πέρασαν 1.173 πρόσφυγες και μετανάστες, 630 στη Λέσβο, 281 στη Χίο και 262 στη Σάμο.

Σημειώνεται ότι η κατάσταση λόγω των συνεχών και αυξανόμενων ροών στον καταυλισμό είναι εκρηκτική, καθώς η υποδομή του είναι για 3.000 πρόσφυγες και μετανάστες και φιλοξενούνται περί τους 6.300.
