There are characters that break stereotypes to show how they are restricting and harmful. To begin, one character that breaks stereotypes is Scout. A major stereotype that she faces is gender roles. Throughout the book she is told by family and neighbors alike to act and dress like a girl.

Work as a group to uncover examples of each of our trimester's four themes in To Kill a Mockingbird (chapters 2 & 3) and in the film excerpt you watched on Wednesday. Your support for each of these themes must include A QUOTE from the text or film and AN EXPLANATION/ELABORATION that demonstrates HOW the example shows an aspect of the theme. (See Ms. Nelson's example for stereotype.)

I'll bet your are asking yourselves, "How many examples does she want?" I will leave that up to you and your group. You absolutely must have at least one per theme or, if there are more than four people in your group, at least one per person spread out among the four themes. HOWEVER, I think there are so many big and small examples from the text and movie that you should have no problem coming up with more than one per theme. Identify the obvious examples, but challenge yourselves to go beyond the obvious!

NOTE: I am attaching here (and in Classroom) a PDF of chapters 1-3 to help you in this work.

In the book an example of perspective is when a cootie jumps out of a student's hair. From the teacher's perspective it could be something that could "harm" her because it is unfamiliar. However from the kids perspektive it is just something in his hair that he's seen before. From Chuck littles perspective it is probably just a harmless bug that was in his hair as shown by this quote "Little Chuck Little, whose patience with all living things".

was phenomenal
