]]> 2018-01-26 11:22:36 UTC https://padlet.com/l_drew/saswmipo4plj/wish/225001938 Self directed learning https://padlet.com/l_drew/saswmipo4plj/wish/225053839 I have been looking at alternative therapies for children/young people.  Art therapy can help children to externalise their emotions which they may find difficult to express verbally.  Painting, drawing and the use of puppets  can often uncover issues children may be having at home or school etc.  

The charity MIND, which have various locations across the UK, offer lots of alternative therapies such as meditation, yoga and massage.  Although not all therapies are available on the NHS , many people appear to find them helpful and can often allow individuals to gain some level of control over negative thinking/thought processes.  They are non-invasive and do not carry the side-effects experienced by many medications.  These alternative therapies feature in the Fountain Centre short film and seem to be making a huge difference to patients both pyhsical and mentally.  

YOUNGMINDS are a UK  charity which offers  support for young people and parents.  They have  helplines, toolkits, drop-in centres and online chat discussions/forums for young people who may feel isolated and alone.  There are short films available on the website which encourage people to seek help and share their experiences with others. 

Mental health is such a vast and complex area of healthcare and one that seems to be so neglected. I have had limited exposure to mental health issues, during my placements but I am aware that this is a growing problem both locally and nationally.  I hope I can always provide patients with helpful and genuine support, throughout their time of need.
