Student Background Surveys:
An easy and quick way for a teacher to learn more about her students is through student surveys. Even in 3rd grade, I give out a paper-pencil survey the first few days of school. It allows the students time to think about how they were feeling, what they want to know without having to ask in front of the class, and other pertinent information.

Individual Student Learning Goals:
This strategy includes students creating their own learning goals in hopes that they will take charge of their learning. If it is student-led, students will pull their own weight in the assignment because they were the ones who created the learning goal and assignment. They should show ownership and be proud of their work. Allowing students to be creative with their own learning will let them feel like they have control on their learning.

Commenting on Student Achievements or Areas of Importance:
When teachers figure out students and how they cope with things like assignments, school, life in general will give them enough feedback so they know how to react to students and their work. Some students may enjoy compliments, others may like stickers on their work, some may need a personal note. Getting to know your students well will allow you to give appropriate feedback to your students.

Technology can enhance any strategy.
For Student Background Surveys, teachers can share a Google survey or use SurveyMonkey with specific questions she is wanting to know about her students. These surveys will give her quick feedback.
For Individual Student Learning Goals, teachers can introduce the unit topic. Students can include their thoughts in an online journal like Evernote. The teacher can skim over these and collect information.
For Commenting on Student Achievements or Areas of Importance, teachers can create class websites or Facebook Page/Group to share students' work in.

Like I said earlier, I do use a survey at the beginning of the year to get to know my students. However, I could create Google Accounts and have students complete the Google Survey.
For student learning goals, I could have my students use online journals on our chromebooks. For their morning work, I could pose a question or statement each day on the Smartboard and have them answer them in Evernote.
I do have a Class Facebook group, and I love to share photos and videos of assignments or activities that we complete during the day.
