As an educator, soon to be School Counselor, I believe when people say "school suspension is the pipeline to jail." Student suspension is at its' highest rate because of different level of discipline. I believe student need to go through reset program and counseling before being suspended. Students are missing out on educational experiences due to suspension. They are not always provided the tools and resources to reverse their behaviors. Now, this is not to say I do not believe in school suspension, but I believe schools should send students through the proper channels before suspension is on the table.

I never understood what laws were in place to protect our students when it came to suspension. One article stated 1,000 kindergarten students were suspended from school in one school year. The level of suspension were disproportionate from the Caucasian race compared to the African American/Hispanic race. You seem the issues in the jail system during sentencing. We have educational goals for our students and having these laws clearly state what is a true reason for suspension gives our students an opportunity receive a fair, free, public education.

Our students main priority is to receive an education when they walk through the doors of a school. We have many students who are at a disadvantage and do not have the resources to place them in better situation.

This article goes into detail about how achievement and suspensions are directly correlated to each other. Students who are student suspended are not receiving the education and tools to achieve academic success. Schools who incorporate a high-surveillance impose harsh regulation on the educators in the school who want to implement strategies and restorative justices. The situations that some students face just getting into school and go through during the day can be damaging. It decreases the student morale and lowers the student achievement rates on those particular campuses.

Citation:
Sparks, S. (2021).

The legal guide that I chose is important to my professional career because I am in the field of growing a student in every aspect. Academic, career, and social/emotional, with the rising issues of suspension of students almost interferes with areas in my career. If a student is not at school they cannot receive all the services necessary to continue growth. If proper channels are not taken to understand the underlying problems in a student, then students will not know how to regulate themselves and the problems may continue to grow. This interview allowed me understand how the reset center works with our counseling department to provide techniques for students who have continuous behavior problems. We want to prevent the suspensions from occurring by developing and growing the whole child.
The best practices would be:
Gaining insight of the students background to give a baseline for services.
Tailoring counseling sessions specific to the student and their issues.
Including parental support for the student at school and home to provide a more consistent environment.
An area emerging surrounding my topic would be what areas have the high rates of suspension. Meaning what are the outside factors that could be affecting a student at home. There may be a lack of resources for families to give the student the support they need. At times, there are undefined issues that play a role in a student who is suspended. As a school counselor, we have to be mindful of the factors that affect our students. We need to configure our calendars to assist in high demand areas and host community events that show support.

Interview:
Rodarius Daniel-Reset Coordinator at Seagoville Middle School
