They have always played an integral role because women's activities were central to the community's welfare from decision-making to agriculture and spiritual practices. 
The tribes had not only medicine men, but also medicine women. Historically, Native American tribes believed that women had more healing power and were able to soothe ill souls with their chants and connection to the spirit world.
Women were symbolic of creation and life because of this responsibility came essential roles within the group, such as social and political authority.

They tended to gardens and controlled the distribution of the crops. In Native communities across North America, women were responsible for agricultural cultivation. Women were responsible for many things like, growing, harvesting, and cooking. Women were the leaders in crop development. 

Research has shown that it was a woman who discovered that the “three sisters", (corn, squash, and beans) grew best when planted together. Women also created the many varieties and uses of corn for example  popcorn, flour corn, etc. They also helped their men to hunt down buffalo. When the buffalo were harvested, the women were responsible for skinning, cutting, and cooking the animal. They also gathered firewood, cooked, and repaired clothing and shoes.

Native American women usually owned the family's housing and household goods, took care of the children, and gathering of foodstuffs. They would also plant crops, they would hunt in the summer and winter, and harvest their crops in the fall. For cooking, they would have to do all the work including skinning, cleaning, and gathering everything you need to cook an animal.
