She just got into a fight with her friend Carley and Carley left, leaving Dani alone in her room. Dani falls asleep and the sequence begins. I imagine Dani and her parents sitting together at a round table that is a bit too small for all of them, so it's (for Dani) uncomfortably close. There is very little conversation and Dani isn't really eating. However, the closeness in Louise's kitchen is different than the closeness in Dani's parents' kitchen because Dani feels very comfortable with Louise and feels more at home there, so she doesn't mind being close. At her parents' home, the closeness makes her uncomfortable. Dani feels like she wants to physically distance herself from her parents as much as possible, which is a reflection on her emotional distance from them. Her parents ask her repeatedly what is wrong, but she remains emotionally unavailable and insists nothing is wrong, even though that is a lie. After asking and asking, she eventually tells them her "dark secret", which is the fact that she is gay. With her growing up in the south, going to Catholic school, and being emotionally distant from her parents, she never had the courage to come out to them out of fear of anger and rejection. In the dream, her parents take a long pause, look at each other, and then smile at Dani. They reach towards Dani, and before any words are exchanged, her front door opens. Dani wakes up and realizes it was all a dream and she is back to reality, laying on top of her bed. I have many friends who are in the community who have had varying experiences with coming out to their friends and family, both positive and negative. This sequence was based off of a dream that one of my friends had about coming out to their conservative parents. We both went to Catholic school for our entire lives and they came out in high school to their parents.
