(1)What We Know

Gender inequality is one of the most controversial issues in the world and Turkey is not an exception.
There are lots of actions are happening in Turkey that violets human rights and women don't have enough field to speak up and defend themselves.
And since Turkey is a very conservative country and a male-dominant society, it is hard to break social norms such as gender inequality.

(2)What To Know

How much is the difference between men's and women's wages?

Do women work after pregnancy?

Do husbands help their wives in house works and childcare?

What is the percentage of women returning to their job after giving birth?

(3)What We Learned

According to TUIK, there is a 20% difference between men's and women's wages. This means while a man earns 100, a woman on the other hand earns 80 by doing the same job.

There are laws in Turkey that protect women's rights in the event of dismissal after giving birth. The employer has an obligation to provide a job for the woman when she returns if she is replaced by someone else while she is on maternity leave. But still, there are such cases that occur.

It shows that fathers in Turkey do not take any responsibilities other than shopping and taking care of the children. Fathers are also not very good at contributing to childcare. They have very low rates of sleeping and studying (9.7%), feeding (9.5%), reading (8.3 %), and washing (6.9%).

According to the research, only 3.8% of fathers eat with their children, and only 8.4% talk with their children.

In Turkey, 40% of women quit their jobs after giving birth. There are lots of reasons such as husbands not helping their wives enough, too little maternity leave, lack of kindergartens, etc.

-------------------------

Resources

https://m.bianet.org/bianet/cocuk/165348-turkiye-de-babalar-sorumluluk-almiyor

https://hbrturkiye.com/dergi/surdurulebilir-kalkinmanin-anahtari-calisan-kadin

http://www.skdturkiye.org/esit-adimlar/guncel/esit-ise-esitsiz-ucret

https://www.ssk.biz.tr/dogum-izni-suresinde-isci-isten-cikartilabilir-mi/
