Young people advocating for themselves is important not only to be able to bring more understanding to the public about a disability, but can also instill self-confidence. The ability to understand one's self and conveying their needs are tools that will make them successful in all aspects of their life.

It important for students to learn self-advocating so that after they have understood their differences they can help other people who are unfamiliar with their exceptionalities learn how to help them. This is especially important as they move forward in their educational careers.

It was important for Ella to acknowledge her disability so that she could know how to advocate for herself and get the help that would be best for her as she goes through school. Also knowing what your abilities are can give a sense of empowerment because you are aware of your strengths and weaknesses and you are not ashamed to do things that will help you reach your full potential.

I think that self-advocating is so important for children, especially those with disabilities. They need to be able to speak their needs and feel comfortable doing so. I know, however, that self-advocating is VERY difficult for students with disabilities. Teachers need to support it in students.
