In 2024, drug companies are the big brother of my generation. Like Winston, we are all under the watch of drug advertisements and shops. These companies customize their products to have as little information on them as possible, producing the device in fun colors, shapes, and added technology. Winston can represent teens because they try to hide their drugs like how Winston hides his diary. Teens hide addictions to these drugs from parents, schools, and their friends. They try to be sneaky, and eventually, they all get caught one way or another. Throughout the story, there is foreshadowing hinting at Winston's eventual capture. Caught red-handed or caught after the lies piling up, sneaking up on them in the most unexpected ways possible. Drug companies release new products with misleading advertisements, insinuating they're for the benefit of the consumer.

Companies as big as the major ones in healthcare are masters at disguising what truly is happening behind the scenes. They want consumers to remain unaware of their surveillance, data, and resources.

The government dictates the majority of what we can and cannot do. There are specific laws that are created by people who are not living in the communities where the laws are being applied. Certain power dynamics between government and citizens should be balanced. There are multiple ways laws can easily manipulate the truth in media and when created laws. The party is constantly rewriting history. This made me think of Roe v. Wade, which was overturned in June of 2022. This ruling stated that the right to abortion was not given to everyone, but was dependent on the individual state that one lived in. The government controls one's choices by limiting their ability to access resources. Consequently, people reacted very differently to this case. Julia can represent the women and men who have rebelled against our current government when Roe v. Wade was overturned. Many people were angry, so they had to sneak around to gain the right to access abortion. Others could be like Tom Parson, those who agreed with the law, even though it was removing a vital resource for women. Our current society's law is not unlike 1984 because people's rights are being limited by those who are not affected by it.

There are a multitude of obvious connections I made between 1984 and our current society's obsession with social media. Social media is everywhere. There are endless amounts of information because fed to people's brains 24/7. These social media platforms are also constantly listening and keeping track of everything you do online. This is called a digital footprint, everything you post is documented online forever, even if you believe you deleted it. The goal these social media companies have is for people to lose individuality by becoming addicted to scrolling.

I found many metaphors and symbols for our healthcare system in 1984. One metaphor could be Big Brother as a primary healthcare company. These companies want to me it seems like they have the best interest of people but ultimately are power hungry. There are many struggles in the healthcare system as well. Many power imbalances limit one's basic needs for proper healthcare.

I chose the 4th DIY project because while reading 1984 I immediately saw many symbols I saw that I could relate to today's society. Symbolism has always been intriguing to me because it helps me apply what I'm learning to my real life. I found it easy to connect the current world to 1984 because the book touches on the themes of surveillance, control, and power. These words are very prevalent in our current world due to technological advances. If we place ourselves in the dystopian world of Oceania, the citizens are divided into classes: inner party, outer party, and the proles. Above all, there is Big Brother, who makes me think of all the conglomerates scattered around our nation. I immediately made connections to how the majority of our current population could be the proles and outer party. This is because we are constantly being undermined, fed trashy media, and limited in our resources for knowledge. Further in the book, I made connections to how the inner party could connect to those who work for these bigger companies, those who genuinely believe what they are doing is good. I found there to be many flaws in the 1984 society, and many flaws in our current one as well.
