I started to understand how to pronounce the umlaute more accurately.
Episode 2 is about Greetings and Good-byes. This is a more challenging video. I watched this for three times as the girl in the video speaks a little fast and I had to listen to the new phrases again and again, and pause so that I could repeat after her. I learnt some new ways of saying hello and goodbye, such as N'Abend, Wie geht es Ihnen, Bis später and Bis bald. Also I learnt some answers to the Greetings, like Ganz gut, So lala, Schlecht, etc.

I watched episodes 1-5. Some of the vocabulary are quite basic (ich, du, sie, er, etc.) but I also get to know something new, like different places in Germany and words useful foe travelling ( Gepäck, Auto...). These episodes provide clear and slow pronunciation for each new word so that I can easily learn the words. I get an initial idea of articles and different cases in German with these. It was confusing at first but after replayed the grammar bit of each episode, I started to understand the differences between each cases and to remember which articles should be used for each case.

Date 12/11/2016

I downloaded a language-learning app called Duolingo. It teaches German from the very beginning. I first went through a test of my German knowledge and it went okay. Questions in the test were basic but there were still lots of frequently used words beyond my knowledge.
Then I talked to a robot using the app. I had two conversations with it, one is general greetings and introduction of people, and another one is about animals and food. The robot basically asked me questions(with audition and I needed to answer them. I got stuck a lot due to the small size of my vocabulary, but the app helped me finding the correct words. I think it is very helpful.

Date 15/11/2016

This app supervises me to spend at least 10 minutes on German everyday and that is a good way to learn a language. I had a new conversation with the robot about restaurant. I could not understand half of the conversation because of all the new vocabulary, but I managed to go through it and remember some frequent words like "bitte".
Then there are courses focusing on different skills. What I did this week were reviewing irregular forms of verbs - habe, lese, etc. Along with it, I also got to memorize some nouns such as Apfel and Zeitung.

Except for new words, I also learned about the singular and plural forms of words and a new case called genitive. Singular and plural forms of words are easy to understand, but I am a little confused about genitive - when and how to use it. Episode 13 also told me about other cases and provided good examples. However, I think I still need to know more about these different cases in class.
Also, I get to know some expressions, like "nice and warm" is "schön warm". Generally speaking, this series of videos are slightly dull but useful as a grammar revision.

Date 20/11/2016

New conversations with robots keep coming up, some are relative to knowledge I learned from classes which I can use as a revision, but others consist of completely new vocab and are not very helpful because I am not likely to remember all of them. This app also provides small "lessons" and it requires users to keep reviewing every lesson. I think that really helps me to enhance my memory. I recently started to learn about food - Bier, Fisch, Salt, etc. During this learning process I found my weakness - the gender of vocab. I keep making mistakes about genders so I think I need more practice about it in my future learning.

I occasionally go through this video to correct my pronunciation. The most helpful things in the video are the umlaute and the German "e", "ch" & "r".The English explanation is clear as well as the German is. And there are clear illustrations of tongue positions witch I consider the most useful thing. They show you the difference between similar sounds and also provide you the tip to this pronunciation.
Under the help of this video I can pronounce the umlaute confidently now. However I think I still need a lot more effort on the "r" sound, so I found the second video to listen to how native speakers pronounce it. It taught me to practice "r" with water in my mouth, but I haven't succeeded yet. I shall keep trying.

http://www.deutschseite.de/grammatik/faelle/faelle.html
http://german.net/exercises/

Date 6/12/2016

I focus on 4 cases today. I first went through the first website twice and made some notes on different forms of articles. I find it really hard to remember all of them, especially the genitive which we have not yet done in class, but after taking notes for each of them I started to notice and memorize some patterns.
Then I did some online exercises on 4 cases on the second website. (I didn't do Genitive) However, some of the vocab and the grammar in those questions are beyond my knowledge, so I found it very difficult. But for those I can understand, I did well. So I got around 60-70% in each exercise. The 4 cases are still confusing for me in long sentences, therefore I think I should go back to these from time to time.
