We cannot turn a blind eye to the fact is that although it does indeed host thousands of informative and helpful propagandas, it is also diluted by other programmes including soap operas and distracting, annoying advertisements. We cannot ban these on TVs, because not only do they make up to most of the sales of television channels; whereas promoting propagandas earn little money. This is not to mention the embarrassing fact that many television programmes and advertisements still contain internalised misogyny, homophobia, transphobia, racism and body-shaming messages - which are often deemed social norms and therefore not serious enough to be criticised and forced to change. To conclude, the answer to the question of whether televisions are effective in raising awareness about social issues is yes, but not effective enough. To raise its productivity in informing people about social problems, we need to focus on addressing the issues of televisions. Because, as aforementioned, advertisement cannot simply be eliminated, it ought to be limited so as not to distract viewers from messages about social issues. Regarding the problem of the outdated, internalised stereotypes about genders, races and sexualities in televisions, I am optimistic that this is about to change soon. Nowadays, most multi-character programmes feature racial integration, without stereotyping, and close to the same (though often still with at least some stereotyping) with regard to sexual preferences. They have been thought to attenuate the effects of social issues. However, that is where the fault lies - racism and sexism were merely insubstantial in the face of our modern problems. Obesity, for example, has remained an enigmatic threat towards mortality for many a time. If television is still accepted as another medium to discourage obesity, then why are obesity rates worldwide increasing? In fact, worldwide obesity has nearly tripled since 1975, which further signifies that television has little or no effect in reducing obesity. Another example is smoking, the leading cause of preventable diseases, disablities and deaths. Here we have a comedy-drama television series, "Bones". If one was to binge-watch "Bones" through its twelve seasons, one may be shocked at the series' countless smoking instances. The effectiveness of television imagery in defining what is recognizably desirable and correct versus that of abnormality and unpleasantness, in truth, is absolutely terrrifying. As Marshall McLuhan puts it, "Television is teaching all the time.", but what exactly do we learn from TV? The truth is that we, as the loyal audience as well as the critics, have been given a chance to find fault with a great many TV programmes, especially in dealing with social problems (gender inequality, discrimination, representation or lack thereof, etc.). Here are some of the dilemmas surrounding TV's coverage of these problems:
- How often is it the case that a marginalized group and its supporters worldwide are pushing for a fairer, more accurate representation on TV?
+) Unfortunately, stereotypes about the LQBT+ community and "minor" cultures are still abundant in TV coverage, which is commonly traced back to the Hays Code period of the black-and-white era to the widely circulated children's cartoons produced by the Disney conglomerate.
=> Furthers the public's reluctance to recognize this community.
+) There's still debate over whether it is better for LGBT+ people to have misrepresentation or no representation at all when the media has proven to be slanted.
+) Attempts to include graphics in fund/awareness-raising programmes featuring "minor" cultures and other vulnerable groups may not be the best. Some are too afraid to use impactful images, while others are already causing backlash by their excessive and sometimes demonizing use of (stereotypical) tropes and propaganda. There's a fine line in between that is yet to be respected by polarised news channels like Fox News, for example.
- Similarly, sexism is more often than not propagated as another social norm through the production of drama series, sitcoms and other entertainment shows in the developing world. This, combined with the growing distinction of social media and its "age-free" demographic from traditional media, is already creating a sort of disdain for the insipid or biased nature of certain television channels (that is slow to change).
- TV advertisements are blatantly promoting consumerism with unique? jingles and dances (that are not necessarily inspiring).
- In the more extreme cases of countries like North Korea or Afghanistan, we also learn that strict governmental regulations of media, which allows little to no room for press freedom, has caused mass public ignorance of inequalities and thus failure to solve domestic social problems.
