Inside the classroom "high yield instructional strategies" are often used. Using higher order thinking I often refer to stations. I enjoy allowing my students to collaborate with one another helping and guiding their way on answer more complex questions with a partner buddy. Then sharing out their responses in a safe and respectful space. When using numbered heads you can partner students up or do the 1/2 method. Allowing students to speak freely with another keeps them active and alert, but also by incorporating the strategy. Lastly Distributed summarizing. ELA is easy we do this each day even with the standards. You could easily do it by asking students to review something they learned the day prior.

In my content area, I could use the Higher Order Thinking Skills strategy in my Nutrition & Physical Activity Unit by having students design or develop a week long healthy wellness plan that will incorporate eating patterns and daily fitness activities. Then I could take it a step further and have them apply their design to PE by demonstrating their fitness activities in the gym and sharing the different fitness choices amongst the class.

I use (and will continue using) digital notebooks for journaling in class. It helps me tremendously for reviewing class content and concepts. Summarizing plays and important role in ESL as well as the other subjects and this is one of the strategies to be used this year also. What I will do differently this year, is to have a whole-class digital journal which all students can input, review, and use as needed.
