Snakes can be either venomous or non-venomous. Venomous means they have venom that can paralyze their prey if they are under attack or are hunting for dinner. Venomous snakes also have an extra organ that is located between the eyes and noes. This organ allows the snake to sense the heat of other animals around it. This would be like us humans looking through a thermal lens, this is what a snake can see because of it’s special organ called a ‘pit’. The ‘pit’ allows the snake to hunt better and protect itself. These poisonous snakes that have the ‘pit’ also have the ability to use their toxin to kill prey. This toxin is a huge benefit, because the snake no longer has to strangle its prey, it can just bite it and wait for the toxic venom to go into the victim’s skin and wait. Some species, like the king cobra, are able to spit the venom into the perpetrators eyes to mame and subdue the victim before biting, or as a final warning to stay away, he means business! One last adaptation is the snake’s unique tongue, it is forked, and used to track the scent of prey. This is connected to the ‘pit’ organ and the two systems work as a team to help the snake find prey, and ward off predators.
