I will encourage them by involving them in my own plans, reminding them that it's okay to try something new, seek other teachers for them to observe that are different than I am, and have open communication about their strengths/weaknesses.

The key for student teachers is similar to the goal we have for students - to develop their agency. The biggest difference is building their confidence in such a way that they feel comfortable leading and facilitating discussions that do the same for students.

It is important that we encourage them to try different strategies, lessons and methods with the intent of being reflective after to determine the pros and cons of what they have taught. Also, a good reminder to them is that teachers never stop learning and every day is a new day.

I plan on building a good relationship with my student teacher right away so we can be comfortable with each other and have a great co-teaching relationship. Communication is critical. I t is what the rlationship must be built. When working with student teachers, it is so important to keep the lines of communication open and active throughout their entire experience. I always keep a notebook on my desk dedicated to the student teacher, capturing anecdotal information as well as concrete data starting on day one. The student teacher and I review the notes daily and they take it with them at the end of their semester.

I try my best to encourage student teachers to find and share their strengths. Communication is key on both ends. Reviewing materials prior to teaching them is important and allows the student teacher time to reflect on what they are bringing to a lesson. It really becomes their classroom for a short time and letting them know that everyone makes mistakes or has bad days is critical. We do this for our classroom students so these student teachers also need to know that I expect them to start over fresh each day and I'm there to offer the support they need.

I really want to be sure we have ample time to reflect together on the teaching process and lessons. I need to be aware of that so my student teacher can be effective at reflecting on her own lessons as she teaches independently one day.

I like how the focus is students centered, just like it should be for all students in the classroom. However, it is nice to be reminded that they are adults and when they start teaching they will not only have their own classroom but will be teaching with colleagues that have been teaching for 1-30 years and they are now equal to all of them in terms of the autonomy in their classroom. Therefore, w should be helping them grow as individuals with their own skills and their own strengths. Also, to help them see we are not perfect and will continue to learn from them and others throughout our whole teaching career.

I am excited to include my padawan in the collaborative teams which play a part in the district. I think that participating in these will help foster a sense of agency that I was lacking early in my career. This kind of authentic experience can take place from day one and I hope will help my padawan feel more comfortable in the transition from student to teacher.

What 3 great concepts...fun, social, and especially-liberating! As a cooperating teacher, if we can allow the student teacher to create activities and lessons that include those 3 ideas for the students in the classroom, that can help foster their own "teacher personality" and help them decide what works best for them. It would be pretty boring if all teachers did things the same way. Students need a variety as well as ourselves. When we create the best version of ourself, that is only temporary. Things always change and we should change along with the times and help others develop their best self to fit with those times.

I think this program was really beneficial for teachers to view and reflect upon. I know when I was going through student teaching I had a few cooperating teachers who always wanted me to teach in the way they taught specific skills. Then, I also had cooperating teachers who gave me the freedom to be creative and try new things out. I know going forward in my teaching career, keeping an open mind with students teachers is key. I think the best way to encourage my student teacher to develop her own sense of teaching identity and teaching skillset is to allow her the freedom to create, experiment with lessons/assessments, and reflect. Not every lesson will go as planned and knowing how she feels as she goes through her student teaching journey may help alleviate any doubts she may be feeling. I can show by example how I approach the work - but all teachers need to find their own authentic way of approaching this work. Some student-teachers are ready to teach almost the first day of student-teaching, while others need to find their wings. For those who are ready to go, I like to slowly give them more and more opportunities to try out techniques, find their ways of teaching, etc. For those who are more reluctant, I like to push to try things out and not wait too long. I find that all student-teachers grow in their comfort, strategies, etc. during their placement. It is wonderful to watch. I love it when they try something new that I have never tried and we can reflect and learn together.

I know that the longevity of being a teacher is becoming shorter and shorter. Student Teachers need to balance all the out of work commitments and the education contract they signed. They are already doing so much that I don't want them to get burnt out before they even start! After 22 years and multiple student teachers, self care should come first. Second is immersing themselves into their student teaching experience by teaching as much as possible rather than hang back. Developing their own sense of teaching presence is very important.

My role with my student teacher is to be a mentor. To help them reflect on their own teaching and to help them to challenge themselves, take risks, and to bring their own style into everything they do. I want to step back and let them take the lead when they are ready, but to guide and support them through the whole process.

I will encourage the student teacher to explore what works for her. She is coming to me with experience as a dance instructor so I know she experience in dealing with large groups of students. The classroom setting will be different than a dance studio setting so she will figure out what works for her style. I love the idea of of asking my student teacher lots of questions that encourage self-reflection. I think it is important to discuss with the ST what they envision their classroom looking like and how they would like to achieve that. It is also important to encourage them to bring in the skills and tools they have been learning in their education classes. One of the videos talked about the mental load that student teachers have balancing student teaching, work, and school. I wish someone would have helped me learn how to set boundaries with teaching during my experience and I look forward to sharing that with my student teacher. I also want to build a relationship where my student teacher feels comfortable to take risks and try new things in the classroom without any judgement from me!

I think it's imperative that student teachers have a chance to interact with the students as soon as possible. I also feel that it is our job to encourage them to try new ideas and that not everything has to be done the way that the cooperating teacher does something. Hopefully, the cooperating teacher agrees to this philosophy as well and let the ST begin to build their own skillset.

I am hoping my student teacher can start within the first days of teaching to help set up the classroom environment by teaching some of the routines and guidelines. I think reflective questions are important to learning your identity and skillset as a teacher. I've been doing this for many years, and I often find myself reflecting on my practice. I want my student teacher to feel comfortable in front of the class so within the first few days I will provide several opportunities for my student teacher to create community building activities, journal topics, or mini lessons. I have found the co-teaching model helps teacher candidates develop their identity as a teacher and their skill sets. When co-teaching, it's important to co-plan and that is when a teacher candidate can hear a teacher think aloud as they prepare a lesson which demonstrates to the teacher candidate why instructional decisions are made. Using a co-teaching model also helps with developing your own identity because as the gradual release happens the teacher candidate can bring their experiences and personality into the lessons. Then the lessons are planned by the teacher candidate but the cooperating teacher is still part of the lesson (through parallel teaching, station teaching, team teaching, etc). Since they are both part of the instruction, they can have deeper reflection discussions after the lessons.

When I was a student teacher, I enjoyed having each teacher model their teaching style for me so that I could pick up on the information they gave, the questions they asked, and the timing they used. Then they would step back and allow me to teach the next round and be the driver. I feel it is important to let my student teacher interact with students as soon as possible. Sometimes as an experienced teacher I become a little set in my ways so I want to have constant communication and reflection with my student teacher. I want them to try to be innovative and try new things when teaching. I know what works for me will not work for everyone so I want them to use their own ideas and teaching methods and figure out what works for them. I also want them to be able to collaborate with us in our department during PLC’s when we bounce ideas off of each other. It is exciting to hear new innovative ideas from young student teachers. I will try to encourage my teacher candidate to develop their own teaching identity and skillset by welcoming them to be a fully integrated part of our classroom from the first day. I want to give them time to develop relationships with the students from day 1, so that once they begin to do their own teaching in the classroom, they are not a stranger to the students. Teaching like any skillset we have is developed and refined through trial and error. I will challenge developing teachers to envision before a lesson (trying to predict possible scenarios/outcomes), and then reflect after the lesson on successes and struggles.

To give teeth to this process, I will model it for developing teachers. I will take an old lesson and redesign it with them, try to predict possible outcomes, lead the lesson, and then reflect on how it went. My favorite module was understanding that adult learners may need to be reminded of their own growth mindset. As an experienced teacher, I can recognize where my mindset may be stuck in a fixed way of thinking (using new technology smoothly and effortlessly is REALLY hard for me--the "I can't" seeps in quickly vs. remembering there is learning in the struggle). Getting to know my student teacher will help me guide him in finding relevancy to the material and the students. There is a huge learning curve in determining which activities, strategies, and styles work for an individual - not to mention that in our classroom everyone learns differently, so finding the sweet spot is hard. I want to make sure new teachers entering the field understand how important it is to be creative and skilled. It is very easy to slip into simply following the Teacher's Edition or Curriculum Unit Maps without thinking about the children in THIS class - what will light the fire to make these kids want to learn more? I've seen too many younger teachers start off excited and then discover what it takes to be a good teacher. The first step toward developing as your own teacher is getting to know all the students. This will be the priority for the initial stage with my ST. Teaching is a special profession because of how perfectly educators are expected to blend science with art. Our mastery of pedagogy and content knowledge, and our understanding of developmental psychology are pieces of our craft, but how we put together in the classroom is the art. I often encourage mentees to notice other teacher styles in the building and I describe some of the teachers that I admire. Oftentimes when these conversations happen, I make note of pieces that I admire in other teachers and try to emulate, but I also point out things that other teachers do that I admire but would not feel natural to my own teaching style. I loved watching these videos because it was clear that the cooperating teachers and student teachers had built a trusting relationship. That is hard to do when there is so much to do for both individuals. However, student teaching is critical in determining whether or not education is right for you. It is not for everyone and I think there are a lot of preconceived ideas about what it is going to be like. Student teaching can reinforce positive ideas, but also help student teachers learn strategies to overcome the negatives.

I like to start off by finding my student teacher's passion. Then I share the standards and make sure they understand them. I strive to allow student teachers and field placements to observe the good, bad, and ugly - teaching isn't all sunshine and rainbows! I feel they are more ready for the real world of teaching if they are able to experience both the highs and lows. If you can handle a classroom in a difficult time, the good times should be easy!

I have the teacher choose one word that describes them - i.e., enthusiastic. That becomes a theme through all of the feedback. The other thing that I do is give them a list of about 20-25 behaviors of effective teachers based on research. I have them identify one to three of those behaviors/skills to focus on during their time with me. We track them and collect data so that the student teacher can see the growth that I see and associate that with their internal experiences.

As a cooperating teacher I try to act as a guide. I am willing to give all the information needed on the "tour" including what I do, what I have done, where things are, what our school does, and so many more. Then I let my student teacher take the bits and pieces they want and combine it with their style. As the videos said we have the opportunity to learn just as much from our student teachers as they do from us, so here is where that can happen. At this point we reflect on teaching and see what worked, maybe what didn't work, and grow as the teacher candidate but also hopefully as the cooperating teacher.

Develop your own identity as a teacher. Keep embracing feeling uncomfortable. It easy to forget that feeling, especially when you start to "get it." Every teacher needs to have a cores set of principles and beliefs. Keep them short and simple. Be prepared. Nothing creates more confidence then when you feel prepared, but its impossible to be prepared for every situation.

Understanding all of the considerations of student needs, curricular requirements, and what they as a teacher uniquely bring, they can begin to understand the "why" to each decision they make. I really appreciate that my student teacher has been in my classroom a few days a week since October leading up to full student teaching in February. This has allowed her to: 1) build relational capacity with students and staff 2) she has seen the systems that I have in place that she can build off of 3) we've done some co-teaching of lessons she's planned which has built her confidence. She's already had a chance to teach a few lessons - some that I've planned (after observing me one block, she taught the next) - and some that she's planned. Lesson strategies always tend to be a focus for student teachers because that's what they're most nervous about - being on "stage" in front of the students. It is extremely important for a teacher candidate to develop their own teaching identity and skillset. Getting to know the teacher candidate and what they value and enjoy doing is a way to start guiding them to their teacher identity. When we speak about subject matter initially sharing my connections and, then, guiding the teacher candidate to their connections helps them start to connect with what they are teaching. As they settle into their identity as a teacher they begin to help students explore their own sense of self and make connections to their own learning. When this happens the teaching candidate solidifies their teaching identity which, in turn, strengthens their skillset. When a teacher is able to connect with what they are teaching, they are able to connect with their students and encourages the students to make connections. When this happens all parties are invested in learning, which makes learning more successful and more fun. While observing a mentor teacher is an important part of student teaching, I think it is equally important to get them in front of the classroom and teaching something they've never seen me teach. For my current student teacher in her final semester with me I am shifting more of my observation discussions to how she felt a particular lesson went before sharing what I saw. I am also encouraging her to try new strategies or methods that she is interested in, both for academic lessons and general classroom management. This has helped her to try things and find out what she likes and what she doesn't, so she can have an idea where to start with a class of her own!

Throughout the time my teacher candidate is with me, I plan to have conversations around the type of teacher she wants to be, what teaching style impacted you over your educational process, and discuss what they believe makes for a successful, safe, and encouraging environment for a student to learn in. I also plan to have her visit other classrooms to get a taste of how other teachers run their classes. Through the conversations and visits, my hope is that she will be able to a recognize that there are many different teaching styles and that she needs to find what works best for her and her students. I also hope she gains some take aways, some "dos and don'ts" through her experiences.

I have been teaching for 31 years now. I do remember my student teaching experience fondly. I now realize that I have a wealth of experience under my belt, and I am looking forward to helping a new teacher get started, passing on what was done for me many years ago. I will need to keep reminding myself that my student teacher is quite young and will not have had as much experience as me. I will need to keep communication flowing while stepping aside to allow them to take over for a bit. I am most looking forward to what my student teacher can teach me. I try to keep up on the latest ideas in education, but it is hard as I get bogged down with lesson planning, grading, and just teaching. I am ready to learn!

I have found that asking questions and seeing what works for others helps me figure out how/what will work for me. I would encourage teacher candidates to observe and talk with other teachers if they are struggling with a specific aspect of teaching. Then they can pool all the information and adapt it to fit their style and needs. Teaching is about being flexible and finding what works for you, which can be a long journey. Be willing to be different and stick to what works for you, while also being open to changes as needed.

This is so important! When I student taught, I had two VERY different cooperating teachers, so I remember trying to piece together who I was as a teacher (I liked being jokey, I liked setting firm expectations, etc). For my student teacher, we reviewed the standards/benchmarks for each unit, I share what I've done, but then I give him the license to do his own thing (could be revamping my old lesson, could be one he cooked up from scratch, etc). My requirements are he has to have learning targets, clearly defined and communicated methods, and a measurable check for assessment. Administrators, take note: there's only one me, with all of my pluses and minuses. We value our individuality, we're not just standard-issue robots from the factory. But if part of what I do can rub off on someone and encourage them to find their own way, that's awesome.

Student Teaching is about the learning experience and having them find their route through a variety of different pathways. For instance, when it comes to teaching math, there are multiple ways to get to the same answer. As a seasoned teacher, I have figured out my "hurdles". I would support a student teacher at first by providing opportunities to observe, to co-teach with me, to plan with me by bringing their lessons and ideas in, to ask questions, to review my "systems" & begin planning their own "system" (SpEd, so there are additional requirements to teach/learn in regard to IEP's, due process, meetings, etc., and just staying organized), and then I would follow their lead on when they are feeling ready to start jumping in and leading, providing feedback along the way and leaving space for us to be able to reflect during non-student time. I would encourage creativity and trying things that they are nervous about. With the paperwork side of SpEd in mind, I would encourage the student teacher to learn from my work (& my tips & tricks), but to jump into writing Present Levels and goals/objectives, and getting comfortable with the language and terminology, # codes, state mandated words/phrases/data points that have to be included, etc.) and overall begin thinking more about how they will have their own "system" in the school district they end up in (& understand that every district does due process differently - i.e. computer systems).

I believe a good start is to provide them with examples of how you (the cooperating teacher) may do a lesson or assessment, but remind the student teacher that that is what works for you and something else may work better for them. Encouraging the student teacher to make lessons that they feel comfortable with and to try new things is also important because they won't be able to develop their own teaching identity or know their strengths unless they actually try something new/different than what their cooperating teacher does. Essentially, I think it is important that we remind student teachers to continually reflect on their teaching practices/lessons to see what they thought went well, what didn't go well, and how they could adapt in the future to help them gain their footing to see what works best for them, and ultimately, their students.
