I have been very cautious of any sort of "News" which can be found on social media for a long time, but the Covid pandemic has really brought to light how much fake news there is on social media and the negative effects this can have in society. I am curious to hear from the people I know; how many of them rely on social media for their "news". As a student Nurse I would not share or like any news posts that could be considered a unreliable source.

As somebody who does not indulge in any form of social media and rarely uses a mobile phone this was difficult to answer! I have a LinkedIn account for professional purposes and for networking solely. I do not advocate social media in any shape or form. It can destroy peoples lives and as harmless as it seems to post comments/photos /submit likes etc, there are always implications! I try to instil the same values into my children too

As much as the negative side of social media out weighs the positive side, I cannot shy away from its use. But instead critically analyse the information posted and decide whether the information is useful or not and use social media as it was intended to be used. I am sure social media was not invented to be used negatively or to cause harm, as a communication tool.

Professionalism in Social Media - Social media can be a powerful tool if used properly. Sadly, some users share unconfirmed sourced materials and lack empathy. As a student nurse, studying NMC code and learning how to validate materials before posting on social media will help me to be a professional networker – understand what and what not to share on social media. The content awareness skill will support me to think before posting anything – will it harm anyone, will it jeopardise my workplace including staff/patients and any other stake holders?

When living local to friends and family I rarely used social media to share my life. Due to my friends and family not able to see where I am now living, I tend to share more regarding my location, what activities I participate in and who with.

Being open and honest with
I worked with a registered nurse who worked within her local emergency department displaying her name badge including both her first and second name. A patient and their family who was not happy with the care the nurse gave him took it upon themselves to find the nurse on social media and threaten her. This exposed her family and herself to potential harm and she changed her job role due to this.

As per the NMC I want to be open and honest as a student nurse however I have changed my name on social media to give myself an element of privacy due to hearing about another professionals experience.

When it come to the news I believe propaganda is rife within the media world, so I am wary of what I read and can't say I have ever shared 'news' unless it is a police post for a missing person. If I had more faith in the media this may change however, a lot of the critique and reporting that goes on as we have seen within the COVID pandemic has caused public upset, outrange and concern without any FACTS.

To ensure I am not influencing anyone incorrectly I choose to not share anything on social media that I read as I don't believe I can be 100% certain of the source.

Having Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook on my phone brings both its positives and negatives. Positive is that I can keep up to date with a few friends on Snapchat, and it's nice to see peoples face's when chatting instead of just typing in a message box. However there are some
cons of the social media accounts I have. Instagram gives you access to look at so many different accounts and posts people put online and you can see posts accidently that may 'trigger' certain emotions and feelings. This is very true for the app 'TikTok', I was using it for the wrong reasons and it made me judge everything I was doing against others in a similar position to me. It was hindering my MH progress. I haven't had the app on my phone for around 6 months and I haven't looked back. When I was on placement I found myself flicking through Instagram for ages when I got home to 'catch up' on everything i had 'missed'. For this reason I decided to remove instragram off my phone for number of consecutive days a week. Although social media has its pro's, for me I only have the accounts as it is seen as the 'norm' for people my age.

I consider social media a necessary evil. As useful as it is for keeping in touch with friends and family, I am very wary of what I post online as once it is out there you can't take it back (even if you delete it, you have no guarantee that another person has not taken a screenshot). I doubt I will ever delete my social media accounts as they are filled with memories and photos going back over the last ten years, but I do keep my information private for security reasons.

I am not a big user of social media. It was fantastic when fb first came out. I could reconnect with university friends who I had lost touch with: I was at university when we were still submitting hand-written assignments, way before email and google became a way of life. In the year I graduated having a mobile was unusual and expensive so we relied on the old snail mai to keep in touch. In those past 25 years the world has become a different place and you can find anyone by doing a quick search. This is great, but it also leaves a huge digital footprint and it is this that could get us into trouble. Due to the current frequency of deaths among my clients at work I have often searched for details on the News and Star notices page. Since Christmas I have lost 6 regular clients to Covid, all of whom have had notices posted in the local papers. Each notice allows viewers to leave messages which the families can see; the digital version of a sympathy card. I don't usually send sympathy cards to clients as the company will send one on behalf of all staff, but on viewing one particular notice and feeling the loss of that particular gentleman, I felt compelled to write a message on the site. The gentleman who had passed away was quite a character and it seemed that everyone loved going to his call; his family was very friendly and the son-in-law offered me car advice that saved me £100s which I was very grateful for. I was really sorry to lose this client and all the interaction that came along with it. But I decided not to post a message; whilst confidentiality is maintained as far as possible it occurred to me that families of other clients who had passed away may wonder why I had not left messages for them. Digital footprint: people can see where I have been! And as professionals we should not have favourites.
