         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>1868:</strong><br>All public schools and universities to be free and open to all persons regardless of race or color. <br><strong>1869: </strong><br>Gave all classes of citizens without regard to race or color equal access to public, legal and political privileges. Included the right to intermarry. <br><strong>1879:</strong><br> Marriage between a white person and an Indian, Negro, mulatto, mestizo, or half-breed shall be null and void <br><strong>1881:</strong><br>Railroad companies required to furnish separate cars for colored passengers who pay first-class rates.  <br><strong>1895:</strong><br>No children of either race "shall ever be permitted to attend a school provided for children of the other race. <br><strong>1940:</strong><br>Prohibited intermarriage and cohabitation between whites and blacks or the descendant of any Negro<br> 1952: <br>Voting rights protected <br> 1956: <br>State Commission of Forestry given authority to operate and supervise only racially separated parks and to admit to the facilities of the parks only persons who have the express permission of the state. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Group name:</strong></div><div>National Recovery Administration (NRA)</div><div><br></div><div><strong>Summary:</strong></div><div>African-American women domestics in areas as diverse as New Hope, Alabama and Edisto, South Carolina demanded renegotiations of wages in light of the new National Recovery Administration (NRA) wage codes implemented in 1933.&nbsp;</div><div><br></div><div><strong>Rebelled against:</strong></div><div>This strike is pivotal because the workers demanded uniform NRA wage levels--$12.00 a week--without regard to skill level. In essence, they were calling for a minimum wage. These various demands for access to "New Deal" federal guidelines places African-American women workers in the South as pioneers of the national resurgence of labor activism during the "turbulent thirties."</div><div><br></div><div><strong>Outcome:</strong></div><div>In the 1880s, Jim Crow Laws were passed that were especially severe in the state, to create public segregation and control movement of African American laborers. After 1890, almost all blacks lost their vote, not to regain it until 1965.<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>1879- Miscegenation</strong> <br>If a white man and and a colored person were to marry there would be a minimum of $500 penalty, imprisoned for a minimum of 12 months, or both.<br><strong>1940</strong><br>Imprisonment in the penitentiary for two to seven years. Ministers and justices of the peace faced fines between $100 and $1,000 and could be imprisoned in the county jail for up to six months.<br><strong>1881<br></strong>If companies fail to enforce the law required to pay a forfeit of $100, half to be paid to the person suing, the other half to be paid to the state's school fund.<br><br></div>]]></description>
