  • A congressional act transferred the ICC’s responsibilities on time zone boundaries to the US Department of Transportation in 1967. Today, the United States and its territories observe standard time within nine time zones.
  • Before clocks were first invented, it was common practice to mark the time of day with apparent solar time (also called "true" solar time) – for example, the time on a sundial– which was typically different for every settlement.
  • Russia has the most time zones.
  • 3 Time zones can happen at the same time. 
  • Australia has both horizontal and vertical time zones in summer.
  • The calculation of time zones are based on the fact that the earth rotates 15 degrees of longitude every hour.

  • What changed about timezones was that back then they would use different methods to keep track of time for example they would do it based on "high noon".
  • Most Americans and Canadians quickly embraced their new time zones since railroads were their lifeblood.
