Before 1920 women could not vote, and anything they had or earned became her husband´s. They had very few political or legal rights. Any property they had became her husband´s, and there was no law against women being abused by their husband´s.

Elizabeth Cady Stanton was outraged by the lack of equality between men and women. She fought for women´s rights, and in 1920 it became legal for women to vote. She was a leader of the Seneca Falls Convention, which demanded equality for women in the workplace, school, church, and political power. The convention organizers wrote the Declaration of Sentiments, which reflected influence from the Declaration of Independence. Eventually, states started to pass women´s rights laws. Still to this day women are fighting for equality.

In the mid 1800's many Americans began to speak out against slavery. As the number of people started to speak out against it, they are called the Abolitionists. William Lloyd garrison was a vocal abolitionists and published The Liberator. He formed the Anti- Slavery Society in 1833. One of the most known abolitionist was Fredrick Douglass, who was a former slave. He wrote the North Star, which was an anti slavery newspaper, and was a main advocate for abolishing slavery.

William Lloyd Garrison, Sojourner Truth, Angelina and Sarah Grimke, and Harriet Tubman were some of the main abolitionists. Harriet Tubman was the leader of the Underground Railroad, and helped over 300 slaves become free. She continued to help slaves even through the bounty on her life was up to $40, 000. Anti- slavery failed in getting support in the south. Even people in the south who didn't have slaves supported slavery. Also, slavery ended in the north, many northerners still supported slavery. Slowly peoples opinions started to change, and more and more people were standing up for slave in the fight against slavery.
