The Roaring Twenties was a time when many people defied Prohibition, indulged in new styles of dancing and dressing, and rejected many traditional moral standards. During Prohibition, the manufacture, transportation, import, export, and sale of alcoholic beverages were restricted or illegal. Prohibition was supposed to lower crime and corruption, reduce social problems, lower taxes needed to support prisons and poorhouses, and improve health and hygiene in America. Instead, Alcohol became more dangerous to consume;In addition, the Prohibition era encouraged the rise of criminal activity associated with bootlegging, infact the "bootleggers" were those people who illegally made,imported, or sold alcohol during this time. Even though the sale of alcohol was illegal, alcoholic drinks were still widely available at "speakeasies",also called blind pigs or blind tigers. As fast as the police closed down one venue, more would spring up in its place. Many people also kept private bars to serve their guests.

Since he was three years old he showed signs that he was different. In fact many years later he was given many nicknames like “ The brain” or “Mr. Big”. A.R wasn’t a typical gangster. He wore suits and learned the importance of buying cops and politicians instead of using brute force. He taught Luciano and Meyer Lansky, two young gangsters of all ethnic backgrounds. Rothstein became a millionaire and a legend. His likeness was referenced in F.Scott Fitzgerald’s book “The Great Gatsby”. Rothstein found himself in a unique position because he was responsible for importing liquor into the United States during the start of Prohibitions. Then, he started to branch out in other lucrative areas such as prostitution or narcotics but when Prohibition ended so did his untouchable status. He started losing half of his ownings. On November 4th, 1928, he was shot and taken to the hospital. During the moments of consciousness he refused to give police the name of the person who shot him. Mr. Big died two days later, on Election Day, when one of his politicians became the next president. He could have won a substantial amount of cash.

It was a period of sustained economic prosperity. This era saw the large-scale use of automobilies, telephones, motion pictures, radio and electric appliances. The economy saw rapid industrial growth, accelerated consumer demand, plus significant changes in lifestyle and culture.  The media focused in celebrities, especially sports heroes and movie stars, as cities rooted for their home teams and filled the new palatial cinemas and gigantic sports stadiums. In most major democratic states, women won the right to vote. They could also smoke, drink alcohol, dress as they pleased and wear their hair short. 

THREE BIG EVENTS HAPPENED IN 1922, THE YEAR OF THE GREAT GATSBY’S PUBLICATION.

1. October 27th: first commemoration of Navy Day (USA) 
2. October 28th: first US coast-to-coast radio broadcast of a football game 
3. December 3rd: first successful technicolor movie (Toll of the sea) shown in NYC.

with The Great Gatsby we got a lot of our expectations confirmed, as well as some surprises. For instance, I couldn't wait to experience the famous big parties Gatsby is so famous for and that I always filled the 20's with, in my immagination. And I wan't disappointed at all, all the excitment and fun I was looking for I found it in Gatsby's marvelous parties, that always left me with a sense of nostalgia, that I couldn't explain.

But an example of a character which was totally out of my expectations was Jordan Baker, Daisy's friend, a woman with whom Nick becomes romantically involved. To me, Jordan represents one of the "new women" of the 1920's. She's cynical, boyish and self-centered. She is beautiful but also dishonest.

The others instead, besides Gatsby himself, that is a very complex calharacter, weren't really nothing that surprising. We have an adulterous husband, that tries to redeem himself with his wife giving her a luxurious life, and Daisy, an unhappy woman that doesn't have the courage to leave her husband and change her life. I acfually found her pretty shallow sometimes, I didn't like her that much.
