This unit examines trace evidence left behind at the scene of the crime that could have been transferred from a suspect to a victim within a struggle. They analyze hair, fiber, fabric, minerals, and bones. By looking at the hair, the unit can determine the characteristics of the suspect and can sometimes send it to the Mitochondrial DNA Unit to do a comparison to find the suspect. Fibers can provide information like where the crime occurred and if the victim was moved after the crime. Mineralogy also assists in finding the origin of the crime in a similar way, such as finding pollen or soil that should have been in another place. Fabrics can be matched to a damaged garment or tied to the suspect's clothing. Anthropology is the analysis of human skeletal remains and can assist in cause of death and identifying the victim based on previous injuries.
