COULD THE BING BANG HAVE CREATED A HIDDEN “TWIN” UNIVERSE?

https://www.bbc.com/reel/video/p083yshg/could-the-big-bang-have-created-a-hidden-twin-universe-

Personal opinion:

The video I have seen based on a fascinating question: Is our Universe really the only one? It’s one of the longest-standing unresolved major problem, even for Philosophers not only for physician or cosmologists. Both before and after watching it, I think it could be possible that another Universe, other than the ours, exists. However, how we can uphold this theory without doubts? We cannot, except that, mathematic’s equations have the potential skill to make a prediction of what the Universe was like at the Big Bang and say what the universe should be like in more precise detail. The problem is that we cannot interact with this dual universe, so we do not have a sensory perception of atoms, time and space in a such size. Events always seem to us to happen in the same order, for these reasons it would be hard to change our prospective. Most people would follow the nature’s laws, not developing an open mind and choosing the easiest way to look at things: the superficial one, which stops us to get out of the box. We know that all started from a chaotic fog, which got more richer and bigger. So the disorder, or Entropy, is always increased. People do not realize, however, that there is not disorder in nature, everything respects essential and fundamental laws. For example, the Second Law of thermodynamic makes up all matter in our Universe. According to Dr Julian Barbour, who directed the research, particles with a huge size get all closer each other in a infinte past, gravity then pulls them together and they come down to a minimum size, flying apart again to an infinitely future. It’s a sort of symmetric double Universe. The central point that links and spawns the two different universes is called Janus Point, which gives a continuous line to the whole system. The amazing new is what cosmologists found, was completely described by Einstein’s equations for the shapes. In conclusion, if we describe nature as it is and it is a fantastically rich story of which we are part, it is not such a bad state of affairs. Quoting Hamlet, “You should hold up the mirror to nature”.
(-Lisa Maria Negro)

THE ARTIC TOWN RULED BY NATURE

https://www.bbc.com/reel/playlist/arctic-stories

In my opinion this video, even though it's short, is very interesting, it makes you see how people live in a remote town in Norway called Svalbard. It is the northernmost city of the World. There are only 2 and a half thousand people living there, and they have to follow the rules that nature gives. One of my dreams is to leave everything and go to a place like this city, I personally think it is a really open-minding experience, because, as you can see in the video, nothing is as hectic as in our countries, lead by the fear of falling behind.
I think that nowadays we've forgotten how important is to respect the place where we live, we have forgotten that we are only guests on our planet, we come, live and after a while we go.
In the video there's a guy, which has left France to go living in Svalbard, and he shows the town, which is squeezed in a valley, because it is the only place where nature would leave them alone without problems. There if it rains, snows they are forced to stay at home, while here we try to be stronger that nature and we try to do always what e "have" to do, even though it might be dangerous (I'm thinking of strong rain, hurricanes, ...), only because we want to finish our "to do list".
This video made me open the eyes also on the global warming, it is a well known issue, but in our lives it isn't that evident, but in places like in Scandinavia or Russia you can really see how the world is constantly changing. A thing that made me thinking, is an interview to a man, which says "This place as I know it, I'm not sure to be able to show to my grandchildren" and that's quite worrying because it means that if we don't do something now, in thirty, forty years we won't be able to see again a frozen place.

↬ Erika

THE LOST PYRAMID OF POLYNESIA

https://www.bbc.com/reel/playlist/secret-worlds?vpid=p07sjsn2

Personally I believe that this short video is really fascinating, because it talkes about secret star-shaped platforms, called “star mounds” hidden deep in Samoa’s jungles and abandoned for 200/300 years. Pulemelei Mound is one the oldest and largest structures in Polynesia. Often referred to as a pyramid despite its flat top, Pulemelei Mound was built around 1,000 CE. Its structure contains eight points, giving it the look of a star from above and it is surrounded by several smaller mounds.

Some locals and experts believe that the pyramid was used for pigeon-snaring competitions, religious ceremonies or meetings, or as a burial monument, but nobody has been able to discover its actual significance. It was interesting to see that even some locals didn’t know about star mounds, this made me think about the fact that it's important to know the history of the place in which we were born, because it is part of us. Our ancestors created the world in which we live now and without knowing their story we lose the possibility to understad why things went in a specific way and why the world is like this now.

Experts think that star mounds could be evidences of a pre-colonial settlement that exsisted before the arrival of Europeans, and this proves that Samoa’s population was quite large, so its mortality rate following colonialism was around 80 or 90% and not around 20 to 50%, like they used to think.

Colonialism wiped out these tribes forever, destroying cultures and traditions. We have to protect our history and preserve monuments in order to leave traces of our passage to future generations and to help them understand the history of the world.

Every civilization has the same importance and it is necessary to remember it, even if we don’t have many elements of their passage. In the future I would like to visit Polynesia and I think I would appreciate to do an excursion into the jungle to see star mounds and discover more about the people of this islands.
-Anna Olivo

THE ANCIENT LIBRARY WHERE THE BOOKS ARE UNDER LOCK AND KEY

https://www.bbc.com/reel/playlist/incredible-libraries?vpid=p06d1ljd

In our society where books and documents are mainly on smartphones and computers ,there is a place where books are locked as in the 17th century. This place is called the “chained library” at Hereford Cathedral. This library it’s quite unique , it was built in 1611 and it’s totally different from nowadays libraries because all the shelves and the books that are chained to them are original from the 17th century. Books in this period were very rare and precious and this method of locking, was the most effective security system available in libraries to prevent theft. Thank to this system, nowadays there are 1500 books from the 12th to the 17th century (all of these are still chained to the shelves). Personally ,I was struck by the fact that these places where time seems to stand still ,still exist and I think that ,preserving those historical places in their original state it’s very important because this allow us to feel history like something that effects everyone and maybe also to learn new things by seeing how our ancestors used to live.
- Simone -

CAN FINLAND'S SAIMAA SEALS SURVIVE CLIMATE CHANGE?

https://www.bbc.com/news/av/science-environment-51762863/can-finland-s-saimaa-seals-survive-climate-change

Look at the picture which is down, isn't it cute? She is the Saimaa ringed seal. But she is not well, because this breed of seal is facing extinction because of the climate change. In fact this winter has been the warmest ever recorded in Europe and this is a problem for these seals that live around a Finnish Lake and need snow and ice to survive, because the give birth to their pups in lairs dug into snow drifts. But temperatures have been up to 10°C above the winter average, and there isn't enough snow to build lairs.

With great engagement the volunteers of WWF in these years tried to help these seals but this help could be undone by the changing climate.

I chose this video not only because seals are in my favourite animals, but even and especialy because it talks about a big problem caused by the man. I ask to myself:"Why human beings don't understand and not respect the law of nature?" Seals are important for this planet and have the same men's right to live.

In these years lots of races of animals have already become extinct and we men must understand yet that if we not treat well our planet one day we will extinct too. Luckily there are people like the volunteers of WWF that everyday engage to save nature and animals. They give me more hope. I think that we have to take example from them!
- Maia

WHY IS THIS COUNTRY ONE OF THE HAPPIEST PLACES ON EARTH?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RgwjHcnbjEs

Happiness derived from money? This is the question I asked me the first time I saw this video. Apparently not. The inhabitants of the small isles of Vanuatu live with what they produce, without using money at all or just using a bit of them. In the society where we live money is the foundation of our life, we do everything with money and we grow up with the idea that money can buy happiness. Is that true? I think yes or correctly, mostly yes. We need money to survive, we pay for food, for a house, for education, for clothes, that are essential for us but we also need money to do the things we love the most: traveling, reading, sports, drawing, concerts. There is not such a thing that is completely free in our society. Of course, feelings, love, and relationships are free but we cannot just live on that. It is maybe possible to live without money in a small State in the middle of the ocean like Vanuatu but not here in Italy. One of the natives says that money cause conflicts between people and I think it is true, this is maybe the reason why this country is the happiest place on Earth. They live together, in a good environment where they respect each other, help each other and live a life full of hard work but also love, and naturally happiness. An impossible thing to do in our country where everyone thinks about himself. Maybe we can learn from them and understand what is really important in our life.

THE MISSING INGREDIENT IN EVERY RECIPE BOOK

https://www.bbc.com/reel/playlist/the-science-of-everyday-life?vpid=p080kv4c

In every recipe there is one crucial ingredient missing: the planet. When we weight our ingredients we need also the planet otherwise our scales will result useless. There is the gravity, which is very important, that pulls object down to the earth and the pulls the earth up to the objects: the scales we use, measure how squashed the object and the earth are because of the gravitational attraction. If you want to bake something not on the earth, but maybe on another planet (improbable) you have to re-adjust your scales basing on the gravity. In fact, for instance in the USA, in recipe books they use the "cup" to measure the ingredients, while the British people think that this is not accurate: maybe this is because the Americans are busy preparing for an upcoming cake-based space race!

With this video I have understood the fact that in every thing we do there is science, and everything is calculated. It is important to do not let things go randomly, because it is necessary to think about what we are doing and how we should do it. I didn't know that gravity had such an important role in recipes, so from now on, when I will be cooking, I would think about all the science facts that are hidden behind.
- Lucia

Self-control is also being able not to get mad in every situation that doesn't get close to what you had in mind. In this case unfortunately I have no self-control because I haven't patience. In this video there is a voice that explains how to have a good self-control and live in a better way. For example go to bed early, do exercises for the body and also eat healthy. The video is short but it gives a good idea of how to have a good self-control.
Syria

THE EXTREME HOMES OF MAXIMALISTS AND MINIMALISTS

They take inspiration from an aestethic movement widespread in the1970s which encourages boldness and excess. They think that minimalists "are missing something in their lives", which are not authentic and are boring. On the opposite side, the minimalist art movement started in the 1950s and its motto is "less is more". The girl in this video, who lives in a minimalist, almost empty and white house, seems to be calm and against the conception that minimalism is boring. She sleeps on a japanese mattress on the floor since she embraces the theory that "the less stuff, the more freedom". I think we have to find a proper balance between the two of them, despite it is really hard.
-Carlotta Fabbro

In the video it has been explained how instagram is effecting people’s nutritional habits by showing pictures of apparently fit and healthy characters. These kinds of photos have a big impact on people’s feeling and have deeply influenced beauty standards. A study showed that there has been developed a new nutritional disorder , called outorexia ,which does not only have direct consequences on the body but mainly on mental health: people with this obsession infact cannot have a serene life, and aim to become always more fit and thin.

I do believe that conducing a healthy lifestyle is very important and I appreciate the fact that the net is starting to encourage people to eat better. However this can of course have also a negative influence on fragile individuals , especially on those that care a lot about their appearance. Beauty standards have unfortunately always existed , and are constantly changing. The only thing we can do , is establishing our personal idea of beauty , not influenced by the common one. Beauty is extremely subjective , and has a huge variety of shades!

Carlotta Abrami
