Dvar Torah Parshat Vaetchanan

Parshat Vaetchanan

Moshe Rabbeinu is likely the most accomplished individual in human history. What could possibly be on the Bucket List of the man who stood up to Pharaoh, split the sea and shepherded the Jewish People for forty years? Just before Moshe is about to die, the Torah specifies that he established three cities of refuge on the eastern side of the Jordan River (Devarim 4:41). Rashi elaborates that Moshe was particularly interested in taking up this venture, notwithstanding the fact that the three cities would be ineffective until the other three cities of refuge in Israel were established. Moshe knew he wouldn't be able to enter the Holy Land, yet he said: "I will do all that is in my power and any mitzvah that I can fulfill, I will fulfill."

The Chafetz Chaim underscores this final teaching of Moshe: Not being able to complete a task should not prevent us from initiating it. We have to conjure up the willpower to take on a challenge even if we are uncertain about being able to complete it. Every moment we learn, every blessing we make is a valuable accomplishment in its own right. If a pirate ship capsized at sea and the current washed many of the precious stones ashore, would one say, "I can't begin to collect all of the treasure, forget it, I'm leaving it all there. It's not worth it unless I can collect it all." That would be ludicrous! Every item is valuable. Yes, the more you can recover the better, but not getting it all shouldn't stop you.

At Hasten Hebrew Academy, we place immense value on recognizing and celebrating the accomplishments of every student, regardless of academic ability. We believe that each step taken towards completing a task is a significant achievement and deserves acknowledgment. Our commitment to this philosophy underscores our dedication to fostering a supportive and encouraging environment where students can thrive. By celebrating both milestones and incremental progress, we ensure that all students feel valued and motivated, reinforcing their confidence and enthusiasm for learning Torah and living with its values.

Shabbat Shalom!

Rabbi Aryeh Birnhack
