Will the schedule for the Digital Learning be the same as for Summer Institute (SI)? Will it take place at the same time?

AVID DigitalXP^™ will start with the first three days on the same dates as the scheduled Summer Institutes and aligned with the same time zone as each Summer Institute. See the Schedule at a Glance for details. The specific opening date for the school-year Communities of Practice are forthcoming. Like a Summer Institute, the first three days will be robust and intensive.

Can new sites participate in AVID DigitalXP?

Yes, AVID DigitalXP satisfies the professional learning requirements in the same way as Summer Institutes.

Can participants from SIs join the virtual Communities of Practice during the school year?

We will not be able to offer Community of Practice access to Summer Institute participants.

Does participation in AVID DigitalXP count for Professional Learning (PL) on the Coaching and Certification Instrument (CCI)?

Yes, participating in the three summer days of AVID DigitalXP satisfies PL expectations on the CCI. The school-year engagement is an optional extension of the learning.

Will we offer AVID DigitalXP on the same dates as all SIs even if we are able to hold the SI?

We will offer AVID DigitalXP on the same dates and following the same time zone as all SIs as long as we have registered participants for AVID DigitalXP. We will be monitoring registration.

What materials will AVID DigitalXP participants receive?

We will provide all materials digitally. Any print materials for new sites will follow the normal delivery process.

What is the cost?

The price will be $850, the same as SI registration. Participants receive three days of summer learning and access for the entire school year to AVID DigitalXP Communities of Practice, resources, and 1:1 virtual coaching (see information on virtual coaching in the AVID DigitalXP Design section).

Will we offer college credit or CEU?

Yes, we will offer units for DigitalXP, and we are exploring the option to offer additional units for participation during the school year.

What will happen during the Summer Session?

Within each Focus Area (Digital Teaching and Learning, Leadership, and Instructional Practices), participants will be able to select a content-specific Community of Practice. Core practices including WICOR, digital teaching and learning, culturally relevant practices, student success, and academic language and literacy, will be modeled, practiced, and differentiated for elementary and secondary and for both new and experienced sites. You will engage in synchronous learning experiences and asynchronous learning with small-group time. The schedule also includes inspiring and energizing opening and closing sessions as well as dedicated time for AVID Site Team collaboration. See the Schedule at a Glance.

If I have attended AVID Summer Institutes in the past, will there be new content for me in DigitalXP?

Yes. This professional learning will include new content such as the AVID College and Career Readiness Framework, new tools to enhance rigor in your classroom, and new resources. The school year Communities of Practice will bridge the Knowing-Doing Gap, providing you with an opportunity to engage with others as you implement summer learning practices.

What is a Community of Practice?

The Community of Practice is a group of educators with similar roles, grouped by regional proximity and smaller than the Focus Area groups. Each Community of Practice will start as a group in the summer with AVID Facilitators and continue as a community during the school year. The school-year community is a continuation of the summer professional learning, and the level of participation will be determined by the individual participants. During the school year, there will also be options for participants to choose additional topics to expand their learning. Communities of Practice include: AVID Elective, AVID Excel, Math, Science, History/Social Science, English Language Arts, Digital Teaching and Learning, Elementary, Counselors, Postsecondary/Career and Technical Education, District Directors, Site Leaders, District Leaders, and a non-content-specific community.

How will the Communities of Practice work during the school year?

The Communities of Practice will be available for participation during the school year with asynchronous engagement and will work with participants to schedule any short, synchronous sessions. Educators are not expected to need substitutes or to miss days of instruction in order to participate. There will also be opportunities to schedule 1:1 coaching support with AVID Facilitators.

Is there any pre-work for AVID DigitalXP?

The only pre-work is completing the Technology Checklist prior to the start of the session.

How will we build excitement and enthusiasm like we do for General Session at SI?

We have designed engaging live sessions to start and end the summer experience. Stay tuned!

What about student speakers?

It wouldn’t be an AVID event if we didn’t hear from students. Look out for AVID to share new opportunities for students to share their words of inspiration and motivation.

How will we engage AVID Site Teams and encourage team building?

AVID Site Teams will be an integral part of the DigitalXP experience. Site Teams will have allocated time during all three days in the summer to synchronously collaborate and leverage new online tools to assist teams as they set goals and develop implementation plans. Synchronous and asynchronous experiences, tools, and coaching for Site Teams will continue throughout the school year.

Can other staff members join Site Team time without registering for DigitalXP?

Yes, each Site Team will determine how they will connect during the allocated Site Team time. Site Teams can utilize their preferred live platform, or, if possible, meet on campus. This flexibility allows other staff members to participate in Site Team time.

How will District Directors (DDs) be involved?

DDs will select a Community of Practice appropriate for their learning needs and AVID District Leadership journey. DDs will continue to provide support to AVID Site Teams. We are developing learning sessions for DDs, and we will work with DDs to engage site leaders to support Site Team time.

Will AVID DigitalXP include AVID District Leadership (ADL)?

Yes. New District Directors’ completion of summer learning will count as ADL 1. Experienced District Directors’ completion of the summer learning will count as completion of ADL 4. District Directors who have completed all ADL sessions will experience new learning in AVID DigitalXP.

What process will be used to prepare new sites to implement the AVID Elective?

AVID DigitalXP will include content to prepare new sites to implement AVID. New sites will have access to continuous learning along with Communities of Practice and continue to be supported by AVID Regional staff.

Will District Directors be notified of participation to verify completion of all summer experiences?

Yes, we will share summer completion data with DDs. Educators who complete the three-day learning will be considered AVID-trained as with SI completion.

Will the Communities of Practice replace the need for people to attend Path to Schoolwide trainings during the year?

This experience is not the same as a Path to Schoolwide training. The Communities of Practice are designed to support implementation and extension of learning from the summer. There will be opportunities for learning additional content and topics, but this will not be as comprehensive as a Path to Schoolwide training.

What is virtual 1:1 coaching?

AVID DigitalXP has a built-in mechanism for AVID partners and AVID Site Team members to secure office hours with their Community of Practice facilitators to get 1:1 help. The time will be used to guide them through questions and to review existing tools and data utilization—all targeted to enhance the AVID impact at the site. The details and technology for this are being finalized.

Do we expect districts to hold this training in person with their educators?

No, we are designing this experience so educators can participate from any location. Through different structures, they will be able to engage with each other synchronously and asynchronously. Sites have the option to bring their educators together to their facilities and Site Team time if possible.

How do I register for AVID DigitalXP?

Go to MyAVID to register. AVID DigitalXP is its own event type. Register as you would for an SI, but instead of selecting a city, select the date you want to start, and then pick one of the three Focus Areas.

Who should register for the Leadership Focus Area?

Site leaders (principals), DDs, and district leaders should register. Learning will be differentiated, and Communities of Practice will be grouped by role.

How can I transfer from an existing SI registration to AVID DigitalXP?

Log in to MyAVID and click on the existing registration to change to AVID DigitalXP. If you are transferring enrollment for a group of participants, please contact AVIDCare@avid.org for assistance.

Is there a limit to how many participants may register from a district?

No, there is no limit. You can register additional participants following the same process as registration for an SI.

Does every site in a district have to attend SI or AVID DigitalXP, or can each Site Team decide their own option?

Each Site Team can determine how they would like to participate.

Do DDs receive free registration?

AVID welcomes our District Directors to experience our new AVID DigitalXP (online professional learning) with complimentary enrollment for one of our 12 DigitalXP sessions in 2020–an $850 value.

What is the cancellation policy and timing for cancellations for registrations in AVID DigitalXP?

If sites do not want to attend SI or engage in AVID DigitalXP, can they receive a credit for future events?

Can AVID Care help if people have registration issues?

Yes, AVID Care is fully prepared to help with registration questions for AVID DigitalXP.

What technology will participants need during the session, and will there be information provided so access isn’t blocked?

AVID Center will provide participants with a Technology Checklist document that outlines the technology tools utilized in the session prior to the start of the session. This will include information about necessary equipment (e.g., a device with microphone and camera) and connectivity.

How will we prepare educators to access AVID DigitalXP?

We will provide participants with information to test access to platforms prior to the start of the session.

Can Path to Schoolwide training registrations be transferred to AVID DigitalXP?

We are not transferring canceled Path to Schoolwide registrations to AVID DigitalXP. Registrants of canceled Path to Schoolwide trainings are welcome to register for AVID DigitalXP, but they must pay the price difference. Path to Schoolwide registrations can be transferred to a future Path to Schoolwide session.
