Classroom Management in Middle School

In middle school, it can sometimes be difficult to keep the students on task because talking and distractions can quickly get out of control. Sometimes I can grab their attention quickly and keep it for the whole lesson, while other times I have completely lost them. This strategy is something I am going to try in my classroom to show that I have control and have the respect of my students.

Keeping High Expectations

What I love so much about this video is that he shows the students how much he really cares for them. He greets the everyday at the door, he lays down clear expectations. He is not concerned with how the students acted in the past, he is letting them know how the will act in his classroom and he does it in such a kind way. I hope to run my classroom like this.

Intervention #1

This is an example of a behavior management inventory. This inventory is used to motivate students. I have a few students who will not complete their work in class, even with behavior contracts. I have seen one student increase his productivity after being put on one a few weeks ago. I think these can be powerful tools for some students.

This intervention requires the student to monitor their own behavior. The teacher monitors them to start and over time the responsibility is turned over the student. The teacher will pick a time period in which this will start, he or she will pick which behaviors and how it is recorded. This can be helpful for a variety of reasons such as; keeping the student in their seat, keeping them on task, keeping them from distracting others, and many more.

This article lists some strategies such as; be organized, build positive relationships, give clear expectations, give class instructions, and many more.
