- Found in 1960.
- Started whats to be called "a decade of defiance".
- Outgrowth of leftwing organizations.
- Based on college campuses wished to create a community of polical and educational factions.
- Introduced idea of disappointment in the US goverment with its radical injustice, uncontrolled tech which downgraded man, threat of nuclear holocaust, etc.
- The SDS "Would replace power rooted in possession, privilage, or circumstance by power and uniqueness rooted in love, reflectivness, reason, and creativity".
- Would try to reach its goals via "new left". Tried to expand from campuses to poor inner-city communities but with little success, however membership on campuse grew.
- 1965, group gained impetus with anti-war "tech-in" at UM and later other schools agaist escalations of Vietnam war.
- Anti-war movment increased influence.
- The increase of membership brought organizational problems
- Several factions inside the organization fought for influence
SDS membership continued increasing until the 1960s
- The SDS led the biggest student strike in history in 1968
- SDS and WSA joined forces to help striking workers while continuing its opposition to the Vietnam War
- In 1969, the SDS-RYM a more radical focused group was formed in 1969
- From them several of its members later formed the Weatherman Underground, they advocated violence against the government and corporations to reverse the immoral actions that the government did

-This took place in San Fransico 1960: The Free Speech Movement.
- Organized by SLATE, a campus political party, several hundrd students from University of California protested agaist the hearing of HUAC and were barred form the hearing room.Police used fire hoses to wash away the crowd. 31 were arested but next day came 5000.
- Over next 3 years, contested speech restrictions by UC Berkeley administration concerning issues such as housing discrimination, HUAC and compulsory ROCT training.
- Continued to work for an independet student goverment at UC Berkeley, in 1964, after ster start of FSM, SLATE candidates won an election to run student goverment.
- In Sept 1964, UC Berkeley expanded restriction on speech and politcal activity. Ban united radical, liberal, and conservative students to protest.
- First protest was small, consisting of 5 tables and students sitting in each seat. They refused to leave when asked and university officals took note of thier names.
-That spaked a larger demonstration of 500, lead by Savio, to the adminitration building, demanding to be punished aswell, 8 were suspended.
- That created an even larger movement which involved the SNCC and SDS setting up information tables in banned location.
-Police arrested civil rights veteran Weinberg, which lead to hundrends of students surrounding the police car. Lead by Savio, who removed his shoes to get on top of the car without damaging it, and several studing did speeches to an ever growing crowd despite harassments.
-That event leaded to the FSM and aimed to make the supreme court establish boundaries on the 1st amendment the only limits to political activity on university grounds.
- The movemnt was joined by teacher assistants which strenghtned the ability to violate politcal activity regulations.
UC Regents keeped punishing participants, it keeped growing until Dec 2 with 4000-5000 students gathered in front of the administration building to hear Salvio speek.
- The gov of California, Brown, ordered police to end the demontrations. Instead of ending protests, a one day strike which included many members of the faculty followed.
In 1965, th Regents appointed a new Universty chancellor, Meyerson, who revered restution on student on-campus political activity.

USA
- The SDS and FSM contributed to the student political involvement in the anti-war movement
- They initially supported LBJ over Goldwater in the 1964 elections
- Felt betrayed by him because of escalation & rolling thunder
- SDS led teach-ins, protests in Washington, DC = response
- Tet Offensive in '68 gave more incentive for anti-war movement
- From '66 onward students protested against companies e.g Dow Chemical-manufacturer of napalm
- Some protests instigated violent reactions from authorities; Kent State University 1970 - peaceful protest that resulted in national guard troops arriving & firing- killed 4 injured 9
- When US troops invaded Cambodia massive anti-war protests resulted at about 1300 college campuses
- Protests spawned a pro-war backlash with increased membership in organisations like Young Americans for Freedom and American Friends of Vietnam - never reached the size of anti-war organisations

Canada
- Even though Canada didn't send any military forces in Vietnam, the war still had an impact on their culture
- University student Don Mitchell said that the war disillusioned people about super power politics and raised awareness about conditions in third world countries
- Thousands of Americans left to Canada because they wanted to avoid the draft which had an impact on the demographics of many communities
- The Canadian government was criticized for providing the US military and political support
- Activists demanded that the government prevent Canadian companies from exporting war materials for use in Vietnam
- November 1967 - 80 University of Toronto students and faculty held a sit-in as part of the campus were associated with Dow (producer of Napalm and Agent Orange)
- There was a minor discord between the engineering students - that were being recruited by Dow - and the rest of the students, as the engineering students disagreed with the protest
- Even though the majority of students weren't involved in the protests, the mood in university campuses across Canada was deeply affected by the protests
