After the Union won the civil war, 3 amendments were passed shortly after. The 13th amendment banned slavery. The 14th amendment required due process of law for all citizens and applied the Bill of Rights to the states. And the 15th amendment granted anyone regardless of race (or previous condition of servitude). This would legally give African Americans voting rights but in practice, America still had a long way to go before African Americans could truly vote freely.

Before the 17th amendment, state legislatures decided who the senators were. The original idea was so that the Senators could represent the interests of the state. However, this lead to massive corruption and did not accurately represent the people. The 17th amendment changed the process to a direct election of Senators.

Along with the prohibition movement also lead by women, the 19th amendment gave women the right to vote. Previously, it was thought that the man in the house represented the vote for the family. However, after major cultural shifts like World War I, women no longer wanted this to be the case. The women's suffrage movement's strategy was to get legislation for suffrage state by state. This would eventually get enough momentum to become an amendment, applying to all the states.

Granted suffrage and citizenship to all native americans living within the US territories. This was a helpful step against the discrimination of minorities. However, many states still refused to grant them suffrage, and they did not have the right in all states until 1948. It was signed into effect by President Calvin Coolidge.

The minimum age for voting is 18. Before this Amendment, the minimum age was 21. People could be drafted to Vietnam at 18, but couldn't vote until 21, so that was a problem.
