What the data suggests about well-being: 
  • South Africa is a "less developed" nation, suggesting well-being is low/lower
Internal Factors: 
  • Labour disputes
  • power supply problems
  • high levels of household debt
  • inflation
  • low business and consumer confidence
External Factors:
  • Falling commodity prices
  • Threat of rising interest rates

What the data suggests about well-being:
  • Higher income = greater access to good quality education, healthcare and housing. 
  • South Africa's low income and high inequality suggest poor quality of life
Internal Factors: 
  • Many people participate in the informal economy so quality of jobs and access to training is low leading to low income
  • Top 20% of the population holds over 68% of income
  •  The bottom 40% of the population holds 7% of income
External Factors: 
  • Long legacy of exclusion due to apartheid which began in 1948
