My first thought when I opened this article was, "does it read it to me" then it said I would have to be subscriber. I have some students who struggle to read, even in 5th grade, I will be looking into how to get students a subscription or if there is a way to have my students sign up for this.

Second thought is how long it took to get the female vote.

Third thought, I have been hearing a lot in the news lately about making it harder for people to vote.

I enjoyed how accessible the article was and thought it explained the idea of suffrage in a way that is understandable to students with no prior knowledge. I thought it was interesting when it mentioned how some countries make you wait until you are in your 20s to vote. I never thought about it since we can vote in the US once we are 18. I will take away from this reading about being thankful for the right to vote especially as we have an election coming up. Sometimes I struggle when reading articles on the computer and might have preferred to read it on paper if I was using this in class. It made me think to have both types of options for my students.

The fact that different countries have different rules for voting made me thing. I struggled with how long it took blacks and women to be able to equally vote in the U.S. I will take away ideas for lessons in how much voting has changed in the U.S. and goals to find how other countries vote while finding literature that will illustrate all of this.

The ideas that in other countries police/military are called in for security of the voters and that in some countries voters need to be in their 20s were interesting to me. This article was interesting because of what it explained and what it did not. The reader can see a gradual progression from white male landowners to white women as voting constituents. What was not mentioned was that Native Americans did not get the right to vote until 1924 and that some Native American women were not fully vested in the voting process until 1965.

I found this article interesting if not eye-opening. I like the fact that some students had the option to have it read to them while others may choose to read it by themselves. It certainly is a straightforward article of history, but second grade may still struggle with some of the vocab and concepts. Hence, it lends itself to a good whole group discussion.
