There are different types of reading depending on the text we are reading and what we are looking for in it. The readings can be informative, reflective, entertaining or critical, to name a few examples, and the speed with which we read today we have two techniques which are skimming and scanning with which we can give a general idea of the text which we will read 

skimming: searches for the main ideas of a text by reading its first and last paragraphs This type of reading allows you to speed up the reading speed by three or four times. It identifies the main concepts, data and key dates, but of course it is effective for reading study materials but not other genres such as science fiction. 

scanning: also known as scanning reading An example of scanning a text is when you look up a number in the phone book, that you do not read all the names but look up a specific one, or also when you look up a word in the dictionary. It is clear that you will not read everything to find the definition you are looking for. It is very useful when you need to find specific information you already know in advance
