A. What is the problem and what are the root causes of the problem?

The issue is that there is not free and equal public education in South Africa. Some causes for this issue are the legacy of apartheid, youth education, the 1996 constitution, and the fact that boys are getting more education then girls. First of all, the legacy of apartheid is that black children (people) are losing out on more opportunities then white people. This is a problem because in africa 8.9% of the society/community are white while the rest, 91.1% are african american which is a lot of people compared to just 8.9% that are being treated specially (due to race). Next, the 1996 constitution in Africa states/promises education for all races but this is being completely ignored and forgotten. Also, 60% of the youth are not in school not including females. Lastly, 9 million girls from 6 to 11 do not got to school while 6 million boys do. The legacy of apartheid, youth education, the 1996 constitution, and the fact that boys are getting more education then girls are all root causes of no free and equal education in South Africa.

With the fast growing economies all over South Africa everyone is being affected. More Families need jobs so less kids are going to school. Then, the kids are attempting to get jobs but there aren’t enough due to the fast growing economies. This causes homelessness, famine, and depression. Including, students drinking more then ever before. The education and community in South Africa is being affected directly by the lack of education.

Imagine being a child/student in South Africa and not being able to go to school because of your race, not so fun, or just to the 1996 African Constitution. More and more students are unemployed, gaining illnesses, ignoring their parents, and multiple no-schooling. Also, more and more poverty, and students with autism are breaking out due to the economic growth. Including, boys getting more opportunities in school then girls. What if this was you?

Partnerships, foundations, and schooling training is currently encouraging students and making learning successful. Go for Gold partnership is a collaboration with education and engineering firms. This partnership gets students extra classes and paid work. The Varkey Foundation operates for “girls greatness”. This foundation is for girls to learn better with better teachers, technology, and classrooms. Online learning has become the newest and very useful thing in Africa. You can learn at home and go to some classroom lessons so that it is easier for families to make more money and learn. Finally, they have started teacher training so that students are learning to the best of their ability. The partnerships, foundations, and school trainings are doing their part to get South Africa back on track.

My name is Arjana and I am here to speak to you about some of the problems that I have seen occur in South Africa. I love education but it is all I have ever worked for, so I am not aware of many other things. As I am a teacher now I can see that students don’t focus on school they focus on money. I am not proud to say but most teachers that I work with don’t show up half of the time and students as well. I can remember my first teacher Ms. Flanigan who was very kind but had some problems of her own. With no food, money, or home it was hard to be women, and teacher. I don’t like to admit that women are treated differently but the truth needs to come out. I am very disappointed in my home and I hope that we can grow and change.
